Chapter Six
Shay smirked. “Well, whatever we may think of the man. He has saved lots of lives, including me and Stone.” He looked over at a silent Drew.
“The man is a killer. No one had to tell me that.” Drew nodded. “I saw that myself and he never hesitated. Lucky for me.”
“He has a motto,” James said. “At the dawn of decision, the coward sat down to wait and while waiting, the dumbass died.” He grinned at them as he shrugged. “But my favorite line of his is... Every man's life ends the same way, so fight that shit every-damn-day.” He chuckled.
Shay grinned. “I like those... ok, let’s go and see what he’s got cooking.”
The men all went down the hall.
Drew followed them to the security room. When he stepped inside, he froze and slowly looked around.
The room was fitted with the latest equipment that technology could produce. All of it displayed in a sophisticated arrangement.
Shay strolled in as he looked up at Drew and smiled.
“Is this a command center?” Drew quietly asked him.
“This is Bane’s security room inside his private home, but he primarily lives at another address.
Jasper Owens lives around here and when he walked out of prison, Bane came back here to find him.
Then he found James all beat to hell. James had gone after Owens himself.
So he and Bane have been busy taking Jasper and his friend Charlie out of the equation, then Spencer ordered the Black Wolves to take our copter down as we were finally gonna nail his ass to the wall. ”
Pappy now took up the story, “Bane grew up here and he had a pretty good idea where to start looking for us. When he got there, he found us and these men did a good job of getting us back here.” He motioned at Deke, Sam, Mountain and Hound.
“Then Bane went after Jasper’s brother Spencer Wagner.
But after he captured him, Spencer being the arrogant asswipe that he is, bragged about how the Blood Wolves would come after us. ”
Shay shook his head. “Only problem with that is the Wolves don’t know that Bane took all his money and Spencer doesn’t have a dime left to pay them with. And the Wolves sure as hell don’t work for free.”
Drew shook his head. “I’ve heard Spencer’s name before, he’s got more money than God, how the hell did Bane get his hands on all of it?”
Shay shook his own head. “That’s not something I ask about, that way he doesn’t have to lie about it to my face.
But one thing he did tell me was to look at his properties again because a man like Wagner would always keep enough cash available so that he didn’t have to go to the bank if he ever had to run.
He was right about that. We found three million he had stashed away, all in cash.
But Spencer wasn’t the only one who couldn’t get caught here.
Besides his brother Jasper there was a third child, a sister named Lisbon Parks.
And they all have a mother named Miranda Gaynor.
We found Lisbon at Spencer’s place, hiding in a closet but we haven’t found mom yet.
You see mom had a habit of getting together with wealthy men, giving them a child then walking out the door leaving dad and the baby behind. ”
Drew just shook his head. “And the babies she left behind? Did she ever see them again?”
Shay nodded. “Oh yeah, she has. She began grooming every one of them. They all fell into line and they all made big money doing very bad things. And I have no doubt that she trained them all to serve her need for money. Now that we’ve arrested all her children, she’ll be on the run and we won’t stop until we have her behind bars. ”
Bane came in from the next room and handed James a bag. “There’s some gadgets in there that you might like.”
“All for me?” James batted his eyes at him.
Bane ignored his teasing then turned to face Drew. “Actually, your rescue was a little disappointing. I somehow expected more of a fight from them. But they died in their sleep. Even the guy in the hall was asleep.”
“Well, I thank you for killing the guy in the room with me. He sounded worse than a buzzsaw.” Drew grinned.
“So if there were three men left standing, they would have gotten in touch with what’s left of that group,” James said as he looked through the gadget bag Bane just gave to him.
He pulled a scanner out of it and went over to Drew.
“Just what I needed.” He glanced at Bane.
“You always know whatever it is, don’t ya? ”
Bane shrugged. “Been in the game too long to fold. I want every damn Blood Wolve to bleed the fuck out.”
Drew shivered as he said, “You got a good start on that tonight.”
James smirked as he immediately scanned Drew’s body. He then moved behind him. Finally, when he reached his neck the scanner beeped.
“What the hell?” Drew growled.
“You were tagged, hotshot.” James shut the scanner off and leaned in closer to study the back of Drew’s neck.
“Shit,” Bane swore. “That means they will be at my front door.”
“You have to lock this house down,” Shay said. “With the front gate messed up they will try to get inside and free everyone.”
Bane nodded then swung around and flipped a switch on the wall pad. They all heard several bangs and metallic clicks then a loud boom as the whole house locked up.
“Wow,” James quipped. “I love all the extras you added to the house, Bane.”
“Get this fucking tracker out of me,” Drew exclaimed. “They must have slipped it in when I was knocked out.”
James reached up and brushed his finger over the small cut to find out how deep the implant was. When he felt it just under the skin he looked at Bane and nodded. “We should be able to pop it right out.”
Bane glared at him and said just two words, “Do it.” He pointed to a cabinet with glass doors.
James walked over to the cabinet and opened it up.
They could all see the medical supplies inside.
James grabbed a scalpel, tweezers, some gauze and medical tape.
He then took out a rubbing alcohol bottle and poured it over the scalpel.
“Have a seat at my medical table,” he told Drew with a smirk.
And when he did, James swung the strong light on that table over the small wound.
He poured the alcohol on the back of his neck then told Drew not to move.
He drew the scalpel lightly along the healing line and blood seeped through the skin.
Drew showed no reaction as he didn’t move.
James picked up the tweezers and plucked the transmitter out of his skin. They all heard a click of metal hitting metal.
Bane got up and walked over. He reached for his weapon and with one strong blow he smashed the tracking unit into bits.
Meanwhile, James pinched the edges of the tiny wound together, added gauze and taped it shut. “Easy as pie.”
“Too bad, we can’t fix the front gate as easily as that,” Shay grumbled.
James looked up at Bane as he raised a brow at him. He knew this man probably better than anyone here. He knew Bane always had something up his sleeve, so to speak.
“Who says we can’t?” Bane stepped over to one of his monitors and typed in a few commands.
A low rumbling could be heard now.
Everyone stepped up behind Bane and watched the screen.
The ground where the front gate was opened up and a solid panel of steel rose to fill in the hole left behind in the explosion.
It fit tightly between the two first posts and when it locked into place, the mangled front gate was now locked against anything coming or going.
Shay stared at it and looked impressed. “The Pentagon could use a gadget like this.”
“Nah, they can’t afford it,” Bane replied.
Pappy laughed.
“What about the perimeter?” Sam asked. “Like the side fencing and the back?”
Bane scoffed. “Electrified and if they get around that there is what I call spitting nails.”
“Spitting?” Mountain asked.
“Sure, connected to ground mines of a type. Only it initiates actual hails of spitting nails.”
“Ouch!” Hound rubbed at his arms as if he could feel that stinging pain.
“I swear Bane, I am beginning to think you missed your calling in a way,” Pappy said. “We could have used you in the ranks.”
“Nah, a killer was what I was meant to be. In a long line of killers really.”
“Yes, but you could have been like Tony Stark,” James countered. “Inventing all this cool military grade stuff.”
“Still made more money killing people.” Bane shook his head.
“So were you ever in the military?” Drew asked. “Like that’s where most men get to do that.”
At this pointed question, everyone in the room got quiet.
