Chapter Eight

Bane slipped his hand into his pocket and brought out the remote. Just as Spencer reached the door, Bane hit the button.

Spencer stopped and screamed as he fell to the floor. He began convulsing like he was having a seizure.

Mountain finally arrived then stopped to watch the man moving around almost mindlessly on the parquet flooring. “Damnit, he ducked between my legs like a little kid and just took off.”

Everyone stepped out of the infirmary and watched as this man kept wriggling around like a human worm.

James walked out and shook his head. “I forgot that thing was still on him.”

“What the hell is he talking about?” Shay asked as he stared at Bane.

Bane shrugged. “We were playing a game of truth or dare. I think you saw some of that on Pappy’s phone. I used it to encourage him to tell the truth.” He looked back at the man lying on the floor, unmoving now. “It’s an incentive to tell the truth or it can be used to break a man.”

James moved closer and told Shay, “He essentially put a cattle prod down his pants. And damn, it worked pretty damn good for being non-lethal.”

Deke shook his head. “It may be nonlethal but sweet Jesus, that man ain’t gonna be able to use his cock again.”

Bane shrugged. “He’s going to prison for the rest of his life. He doesn’t need it. He should have known better than to try and run. I can’t be responsible because Spencer Wagner is a moron.”

Hound stepped forward and asked Bane “Is it alright to drag him back now?”

Bane nodded then slipped the remote back into his pocket. “Yeah, you can move him. But don’t take him back to the Infirmary. I got another room you can throw him in.”

Hound nodded then dragged Spencer a short ways.

Bane went ahead of him and opened a small room. There were no windows in there and it had a steel door.

Hound flopped Spencer onto his back onto a cot with the handcuffs still on.

Spencer was still unconscious when Bane shut and locked the door.

When he joined them all back in the Infirmary. Stone looked up and asked, “So, how does this security that you have work?”

Bane looked at him and said, “Once it’s locked down no one can get inside.

The outside walls are covered in solid steel and the windows are now bulletproof.

The doors and windows are locked down tight and there is a new feature I just added.

Once the locks are engaged it triggers a feature outside that will let us know if anyone gets too close.

I have paint bombs buried near the walls that have windows. ”

Everyone in the room just shook their heads.

Bane was anything but careless with his own safety.

Shay got a ping on his phone and he paused when he read the incoming text. Looking up at Bane, he shook his head. “They found his three safes and all of them are packed with cash. So far, it’s running up to at least three million. They’ve got it packed away into a heavily guarded SWAT van.”

Bane just shook his head. “That doesn’t surprise me. I always kept cash too. That way there’s never a paper trail.”

Sam snorted. “Oh yeah, you did. When we brought Cricket here she opened the safe and we found a hell of a lot of cash.” Then he stared at Bane. “But you never did ever ask for that back, did you?”

Bane shrugged. “I had more than I could ever spend and what you found was what I let her find. I never needed it back. Besides, she used part of that for Dusty and that’s what I hoped she would do.”

Deke nodded. “She did a hell of a lot more than just set Dusty up. She gave some of it to the club. Then she got Raine and his brothers set up in business.”

Bane nodded. “She did what she had to do. I can’t blame her for that. She has a big heart. And she has honor. Honor is something I can recognize. She protected all of you even after you penalized her for what Cordy did.”

Deke and Sam nodded.

Deke then replied, “Yeah, we did what our bylaws said. But it was never her as a servant, we knew she saved my kids. She is righteous in our books. On the other hand, Cordelia was not.”

Bane nodded. “She had too much of me in her. And no one was there to train her any better. At least I had my grandfather. He taught me to contain my rage and how to use it against my enemies. He trained me to be a better man in an odd way and maybe some people will never understand how he could train me to be a killer but that was how we handled this gene some of us were born with. Going all the way back in history that was what the Jessins were...People who could protect, no matter what. Did we kill? Yes we did, were the best of the best, but we also had a code of honor we never drifted from. That’s what I saw in Cricket’s eyes.

She never ran when she could have. She wasn’t my kid but she was Grace’s daughter with Orrin.

My own daughter was dead by then. Cricket was still Grace’s child and she had the Jessin code of honor.

She also had the same look in her eyes as my grandfather.

So when I was alone after I met her, I could hear his voice talking in my brain.

I remembered his lessons, his patience, his calm.

I saw that in her eyes and I think that’s when I began to change.

Yeah, Bastian gave me a do over but I think it was really Cricket who started it. ”

“And now?” Sam asked.

“Now I have my own family and I pray that Aurora will have more of her mother rather than her father in her. But if she does have some of me I know how to train her to use it against someone who deserves it.”

“That may be but you gotta a long way to go to be righteous.” Sam growled.

Bane nodded. “I am always aware of that fact, Bones. However, I do not expect to be righteous. Never did. But this case might be the way to make up for some of my mistakes. Owens deserved what he got while behind bars and he’ll go back now.

And his brother, his sister and his mother will be right next to him this time.

” He shook his head. “I’ve been keeping track of all the players and I think you need to look at Lisbon a little bit closer.

Her mom didn’t walk away from her the day she was born and Mitchell Parks was no good from day one.

She learned from the crib to hustle, steal and lie all the while acting like an innocent bystander.

She isn’t so innocent and her whole life is nothing but a lie. ”

“Do you have a file on Miranda as well as both her sons?” Shay wanted to know.

Bane nodded. “Yes, I do and Spencer was telling the truth, Miranda did end Clifton Wagner’s life by forcing him off the road.

But she never took her son with her when she left.

Clifton’s mother raised him and she did try but mommy was always there watching him, training him to be as bad as she was.

And I do know one thing about Miranda. She’s going to run and leave her own children behind to do the time and take the blame for things they never did. She’s just that kind of woman.”

“You think she’s got the cash to start over somewhere she isn’t known?” Shay asked.

Bane nodded. I know she does. She’s also got a new name.

I would almost bet on that. This might be her last chance to reinvent herself.

I would look for someone headed south of the border.

By ship or a plane. She will be disguised in some way that matches her identification as well.

She won’t try to draw attention to herself but she’ll be watching everyone around her.

She loves gold and she’ll make her last mistake by trying to take something that doesn’t belong to her. She just can’t seem to help herself.”
