Chapter 53

Volik

My heart is pounding. Because hers is pounding.

I open the door to the roof, and Nix steps through as she finishes putting her hair in a braid.

“Are you sure…?”

“Da.” I close the door behind her.

My own nerves are there. Just under the surface.

I have never jumped with someone before. Never considered it.

But it’s Nix.

My mate.

My lips lift in a smile.

I will not drop her.

I start to put on her backpack full of clothes so she does not have to carry it, but the straps are not big enough.

Nix takes it from my hands and slips it on. “I know it’ll be a tight fit, but we could take my car.”

“The road does not go to my house.” I lift my hand and stroke my thumb down her cheek. “Do not be afraid.”

“I’m not.”

“You lie.”

“Fine,” Nix huffs. “But I already told you. I’m a bit afraid of heights.”

I dip my chin. “I will not go high.”

I reach down, grip her perfect ass, and lift her.

Nix squeaks as she wraps her legs around my waist the best she can.

I place her other bag, with the cheese, between us, then hug her to me with both arms.

“Even if you let go.” I hold her gaze. “I will not drop you.”

Our heartbeat continues to thrum, but she nods.

“You believe me?”

Nix drags one hand up the back of my neck, into my hair. “I believe you.”

I use my hand on her ass to lift her higher. “Good.” I press my lips to hers.

And I keep them there. As I start to run toward the edge of the roof.

She gasps.

I lick into her mouth.

She groans.

And I jump.
