Chapter 60
Nix
My chest aches with the weight of emotion swelling inside my ribs. And I let that weight pull me to Volik.
His hands are on me.
Inspecting. Reassuring.
And he’s so gentle.
Strength ripples the air around him. But his hands are so gentle.
It’s different from last night. But just as possessive.
With my arms around his shoulders, I feel him swallow roughly.
Then the scent of burning mint singes my nose.
I pull back, afraid I’ve hurt him.
But when his eyes open, I watch a single glistening tear roll down his cheek.
And that weight inside my chest threatens to drag me to the ground.
It’s my turn to struggle through a swallow as I move my hand to his cheek and wipe the tear away.
“I know.” I press my other hand over my heart. “I’m here.”
“Always.” Volik’s promise is choked. He nods and says it again. “Always.”
Then his mouth is pressing against mine.
And he’s lowering us to the bed.
It’s slow.
The press of his hips.
The stretch of my body around his.
It’s slow. But our heartbeats are not.
