Iblink awake. The dark that no longer looks dark is still around me.

It’s quiet.

The temperature of the room is slightly cooler than before.

Rolling onto my back, I look at the other side of the bed.

Cooler, because Volik isn’t with me.

I pull the thin blanket up to my chin.

I’m alone in this underground cave home. In the middle of the woods. With no car. No road that even leads here. But my heartbeat stays steady.

Because I feel safe here.

Because I knew Volik would leave.

Because I know where Volik is going.

I let my eyes close.

Because I know what Volik is doing.

Rolling onto my side, I fall back into sleep, feeling nothing but peace.
