Chapter 14
Alex
I stand tall, the weight of leadership resting heavily on my shoulders. Gregor’s lifeless body lies at my feet, a sobering reminder of the brutal reality I’ve just embraced. My heart still pounds from the intense battle, the adrenaline coursing through my veins. But it’s not just the physical exertion that leaves me winded—it’s the gravity of what this means for my future.
As the new Alpha of the Archipelago Pack, I secured my rightful place, but at what cost? My gaze shifts to Elena, her eyes shining with pride and concern. At that moment, I realize the magnitude of my choice. My fate intertwines with hers, but we haven’t discussed what that means. Yet.
Protecting her, and defending our home—those are clear priorities. But now, my responsibilities extend far beyond that. I’ve bound myself to this land, to this Pack, in a way that demands my complete dedication. A part of me thrills at the prospect of leading, of making a real difference for my kind. But another part can’t help but wonder about the life I envisioned with Elena. One where she doesn’t feel like an outsider.
Her gentle touch on my arm draws my attention to her. I search her eyes, seeking reassurance that she understands the path we’ve embarked upon. There’s so much left unsaid, so many questions about how our relationship will evolve within the confines of my new role.
“What are you thinking?” she asks as though I’m a puzzle she’s trying to figure out.
I pause for a second. My natural desire to be honest and forthright warring with my uncertainty about grabbing the one thing I want more than anything. If I tell her the truth, will that scare her away?
“Spill it. You don’t stay this quiet especially when asked a direct question unless you are trying to protect something. Me, if I had to take a guess. So tell me, what are you thinking?” This time she says the last words in a short, choppy cadence that leaves no doubt she expects an answer.
“I’ve made my move. What’s yours?”
She clasps my hand. “To save the island. To save the Archipelago Pack.”
I squeeze Elena’s hand, her words echoing in my mind. Save the island, save the Pack. It’s a noble cause, one I’ve committed myself to. But as I stand here, my new responsibilities weigh down on me, and I wonder what the future holds for us.
My thoughts drift back to the past, to the day Elena was sent away. The memory is still raw, a painful reminder of the Pack’s rejection. They didn’t understand her, didn’t accept her. And now, with me as their Alpha, will things be different? Can she find her place here, among those who once cast her out?
I glance at her, trying to read the emotions in her eyes. She’s strong and resilient. But is she ready to face the challenges that lie ahead? The Sitka spruce invasion is just the beginning. There will be more obstacles, and more battles to fight. And when it’s all over, will she stay? Or will she leave, seeking a life free from the confines of the Pack?
The thought of losing her hits like a rock in my stomach. I can’t bear the idea of watching her walk away, not after everything we’ve been through. But I can’t abandon my duty, I can’t turn my back on the Pack I’ve sworn to lead.
It’s a delicate balance that I’m not sure how to navigate. I want to be the Alpha they need, to guide them through the trials ahead. But I also want to be the man Elena deserves, the one who can give her the love and support she needs.
“Alex?” Her voice pulls me from my thoughts again.
I hesitate. Will saying my doubts aloud make them come true?
“There’s so much to do.” So much to say that I’m not ready to say right now.
“Then we better get started. We have to Gregor back to the island without drawing attention.”
I find my phone in the scraps of my clothing, my fingers moving across the screen as I make calls. My security team, handpicked and highly trained, was dispatched to Alaska to rendezvous with me here. They’re the best in the business, discreet and efficient. They can handle the delicate task of removing Gregor’s body without drawing unwanted attention.
“My team will take care of getting Gregor back to the island for a proper burial.”
Elena nods, her eyes still fixed on Gregor’s lifeless form. The conflicting emotions cross her face—relief, sadness, uncertainty. I want to reassure her that everything will be alright. But the words stick in my throat, the gravity of our new reality sinking in.
I make another call, this time to the ship. “I need you to pack up everything in Ms. Mikhailov’s suite, including the bags I moved there today,” I instruct, my tone leaving no room for argument. “Everything needs to get transferred to Kodiak Island.”
There’s a pause on the other end of the line, a momentary hesitation. “Sir, we’ll need Ms. Mikhailov’s permission…”
I glance at Elena, a flicker of realization dawning in her eyes. Her lips part, a silent gasp of surprise. In that moment, the pieces fall into place in her mind.
“You... you moved in with me?” she whispers to me, and I nod. She takes the phone gingerly from my hand. “You have Ms. Mikhailov’s permission. Do as instructed.” Then she hands the phone back to me.
