Chapter 17
Alex
I stand before the Archipelago Pack, the crackling bonfire illuminating the solemn faces around me. Elena stands beside Anna, providing comfort and support as the flames consume Gregor’s body.
“Gregor was a great Alpha,” I begin, my voice carrying over the crowd. “He led our Pack with strength and wisdom for many years. We will remember him fondly and honor his legacy.”
Murmurs of agreement ripple through the Pack. I see tears in some eyes, but also a glimmer of hope.
“But now, we must look to the future. Our Pack has faced challenges, and our ecosystem has suffered. I promise to dedicate myself to restoring our strength and rejuvenating our land. Together, we will replenish the prey and ensure a thriving future.”
The weight of their expectations and their support almost overwhelms me. Elena catches my eye, her gaze filled with love and encouragement. Anna nods, a sign of her acceptance and trust.
As the flames rise higher, I raise my voice. “Let us remember Gregor, but also embrace the change that comes. We are the Archipelago Pack. And we will rise stronger than ever!”
Howls and roars of agreement fill the night air. I feel a surge of pride and determination. I know I can overcome any obstacle with Elena by my side and the Pack united.
We watch as the fire consumes the last of Gregor’s remains, the embers floating up into the starry sky. A sense of closure and new beginnings settles over us all.
As the flames of Gregor’s funeral pyre dance into the night sky, I stand with Elena and Anna, united in our shared loss and hope for the future. Suddenly, a figure emerges from the shadows, her steps deliberate and purposeful. It’s Cassandra, her eyes fixed on me as she approaches.
“Alpha,” she says, her voice steady despite the emotion in her eyes. “I’ve had time to reflect since the challenge. I come to you now with a request.”
I nod, gesturing for her to continue. Elena and Anna watch silently, their presence a comforting anchor.
“I seek your permission to travel to the locations where I’ve established the changing stations for our kind,” Cassandra explains. “I wish to ensure their proper functioning and make any necessary improvements.”
I study her face, seeing the determination etched in her features. The changing stations are just an excuse, a way for her to escape the painful memories that haunt this place. But I also understand the need for distance, for time to heal.
“Cassandra,” I begin, my tone gentle but firm. “I grant your request. Travel to the stations, and do what you must. But your place in this Pack remains, should you return.”
Her eyes widen, a flicker of surprise and gratitude passing through them. “Thank you, Alpha,” she says, bowing her head in respect.
I step forward, placing a hand on her shoulder. “May you find what you seek on this journey, Cassandra. Not just the functionality of the stations, but the peace and purpose you desire.”
She meets my gaze, a hint of a smile on her lips. “I will try, Alpha. Thank you for understanding.”
My breath catches in my throat when Cassandra stops in front of Elena. “You may not believe me, but I didn’t mean to create ill will. But I can tell you with all my sincerest honesty, I hope I find someone who will look at me the way Alex looks at you. I never really had a chance.”
Elena looks shocked for a split second before she recovers and says, “I hope you find your mate, Cassandra. I really do.”
With that, Cassandra turns and walks away, her figure disappearing into the night as quietly as she arrived. Elena’s hand slip into mine, her presence a reminder that love and support now surround me.
“Gregor used that girl terribly. It is the only thing we ever fought about. Well, that and sending Elena to the Polar Bears,” Anna says as she walks away.
