Ingrid Yung, a first-generation Chinese American and the first lawyer in her family, is close to becoming the first minority woman partner at the venerable Wall Street firm Parsons Valentine & Hunt.

She has mastered the art of passing, matching the old-boy culture with cafeteria banter, softball games, and relentless billable hours.

After an offensive incident at the summer outing threatens the firm’s reputation, Parsons Valentine orders her to lead a new diversity and inclusion initiative.

The assignment arrives just as she is closing the enormous transaction meant to lock in her partnership, and it pits her against colleagues, including her golden-boy boyfriend.

Ingrid must weigh the prestige of partnership against the cost to her ethics, and decide what the American dream is worth now that it is finally within reach.
