Just like clockwork.
Showing up here and people-watching has become my secret obsession. The Serpents of Chaos Motorcycle Club do a charity ride or cookout without fail once a month.
I’m new to Rest Falls, a town where no one really knows me—and I prefer it that way. I landed myself a job at Lu’s Sweet Treats, a bakery owned by my best friend, Lu. As a pastry chef by trade, I love what I do, and this place feels like the fresh start I need.
My mother passed away two years ago.
It was always just her and me against the world.
And without her, I’ve had to build a new life.
But instead of looking forward, I’ve found myself drawn in by the past.
A man with dark hair, a little gray at the temples, and a thick, bushy beard laughs at something one of the women says to him. He’s a tall man, at least six foot two, with ocean-blue eyes and laugh lines that tell me he’s enjoyed his life. There’s a patch that says President on his chest, and although he doesn’t come to these cookouts every single time, I come hoping to see him.
Although my brown skin is much darker than his fair tone, more like my mother’s Sri Lankan heritage, I know those blue eyes and those matching set of dimples.
I look at them in the mirror every morning.
