10. Chapter 10 #3

He didn’t lay there long, though, rolling to his knees and scrambling for his wand, then rushing back toward the fortress.

Probably to get medical help. Although once everyone heard the story of who he was, no one would treat him well.

Anyone who’d met Milo already adored him, to start, but even those who hadn’t met him personally liked him because he was doing his best to protect the duchy.

Advocate Nottle watched the coward go, disgust rampant over his face, nose crinkled up.

“Damn, I wish I’d known why he was so eager to get up here.

It did strike me as strange, because who wants to do this multiday trek to get up here—no offense, Captain—for an investigation, no less.

I thought he was escaping the tense vibe at work right now, not actively trying to interfere with you.

I’m so sorry, Milo. If I’d known his true intentions, I’d never have agreed to bring him with me. ”

Milo also had a disgusted wrinkle of the nose but reassured him.

“It’s not your fault, don’t feel bad. Someone warned me Andrew was making noises about coming up after me, so I knew this was a possibility, but like you, I didn’t imagine he’d really come here just to hassle me.

I’ve already turned him down multiple times and told him off for even thinking about getting back together.

I do not understand why the man’s so persistent. ”

It made perfect sense to Rowan. Milo was wonderful.

He was a very sweet man, fun to date, insatiable in bed, and one of the more competent mages Rowan had ever met.

Of course losing Milo would make Rowan feel like part of his heart had been carved out.

At least, if they ever broke up, Rowan was quite sure Milo would take a piece of his heart with him.

This asshole chasing after Milo made perfect sense. Him cheating on Milo to begin with, and treating him so shoddily, was what didn’t make sense. How could you have this man and not treat him like the precious treasure he was?

Nottle eyed Rowan with some trepidation. “You weren’t really going to throw Andrew into the sea, were you?”

“My good deed for the day.” Rowan was perfectly serious.

Milo faked a cough to cover a laugh, hand over his mouth as he turned his face away. He did a poor job of it as he was clearly laughing.

Nottle eyed him some more, this time with unease. “Captain, I really can’t have you do that. You do understand?”

Rowan might understand, but he didn’t have to like it.

“I won’t kill him.” In front of witnesses, at least. “But keep him away from Milo. I’ll break every bone in his body before I let him touch Milo again.”

Nottle winced again. “Yeah, I don’t blame you. All right, I’ll go deal with him.”

Better him than Rowan.

When Nottle walked off, Milo blew out a shaky breath, and he seemed a bit…lost. Like he wasn’t quite sure how to feel about the sudden attack on his newfound peace. But just as quick, he shook the melancholy off and threw his arms around Rowan’s neck, smile brilliant.

“For the record, feel free to beat up on Andrew some more. That was cathartic.”

Snickering, Rowan pulled Milo in closer, hands gripping his slim waist. “Pity I couldn’t feed him to the Drachifel.”

“Isn’t it? Well, maybe we’ll find another chance to drop him into the drink.” Milo lifted enough to kiss him, lips lingering. “That’s for punching Andrew.”

While the kiss was nice, no question, Rowan felt like teasing. “I brought you a snack, too.”

“For snacks, you get a blow job.”

“I love your priorities.” He knew Milo was mostly teasing and this was his roundabout way of saying thank you.

He also knew Milo was deliberately trying to move past this moment.

Rowan would let him, as he didn’t want Milo lingering on unpleasant thoughts, either. Best to just forget the man entirely.

“What? Ex-boyfriend isn’t important, he’s just an asshole and a decision I regret ever making.

Hot boyfriend bringing me snacks? Far more important.

Now, come here. We’re going to duck behind that bastion over there, and you’re going to lean up against the wall, and then I’m going to suck you until you’re coming down my throat. ”

Rowan followed with a silly little grin plastered to his face because that sounded amazing. Also, mental note: Bring Milo snacks. Often.

Oh, and tell his family who Advocate Latimer really was, because when they knew?

They wouldn’t like him at all. The bastard would likely be sleeping under the stars.

The Rangecrofts had no tolerance for cheating.

They’d especially be wroth at the man for daring to think he could break Milo and Rowan up.

His stay here at Gravegarde would definitely not be comfortable. And if Rowan had anything to say about it, it would be downright painful and embarrassing.

Notes:

Riley: Drachifel?

Rowan: Drachifel.

AJ: Now hang on, you two. You can’t kill Andrew.

Riley: *glares*

Rowan: *glares*

AJ: For god’s sake, don’t make the plot go even further off the rails! Ugh, characters.
