Lying in beam of sun, watching

dust particles float and dance

Knot in floorboard that looked

like a koala’s face

Smell of heater the first autumn

night we turned it on

Sitting on top of vent

with blanket on cold morning

watching TV

Smell of air conditioner the first summer

day we turned it on

Collecting cicada husks

from tree in front yard

Squinting at lights

of Christmas tree to make them

into stars

Listening to house pop and creak

at night with no one else awake

like it was telling me secrets

Hearing deluge of rain on roof;

glad that I had a roof

Feeling like there was one

tiny piece of this great spinning world

that was mine to stand on
