“Shush,” I whispered in Donovan’s ear. I held him flat on the ground, my enormous arms and legs pinning him in place. My berserker magic was almost too easy to use; I had so much emotional energy to channel. “It’s not over yet.”
I felt him go limp almost immediately. He knew.
Next to me, Cress and Fionn kept struggling. I lifted my head quickly, glanced across the field, and watched Connor take my hand. He jerked roughly, pulling me close. Almost there…
I had to get them back behind the ward; Connor wouldn’t be able to sense anything was amiss with a magical curtain between us. Quickly, I picked up Donovan, scooped up whatever of Fionn, Cress, and Bronwyn I could grab with my other hand, and pushed them bodily through the army surrounding us.
Within seconds, we were over the line. I exhaled with relief, blocking the others from sight with my enormous body, and turned my head away, peeking out from the curtain of my hair.
They were opening the gateway now. Oh, God, we were so close…
Cress looked at me, then at my face. Her eyes bulged.
That’s right, Cress.
Donovan was still sandwiched against me. I wrapped my arms around him and held him close, sending him words and comfort with my skin. Later. You can punish me later.
It was getting difficult to hold onto my form; I could feel my berserker power draining away. Desperately, I funneled my anxiety into my muscles, trying to keep them as big as possible.
Finally, finally, Connor walked towards the gateway. He lifted his head and surveyed the slavering, mindless rabble that he called an army. I turned my head away and listened to Connor’s final words.
“So, you are now free…. to kill them all.”
I bared my teeth. Even though I knew it was coming, I was still pissed he managed to easily find a way to sink to the lowest depths possible.
Watching, I held my breath.
Connor walked through the blazing gateway, pulling “me” behind him.
All around us, Connor’s army roared and lurched towards us.
