4 - The Anniversary Surprise #2

“No one’s asking you to,” Tyler assured her, though the gleam in his eye suggested otherwise. “I’ll start. Ethan, truth or dare?”

And so the game began, innocently at first—truths about embarrassing moments, harmless dares to do impressions or share secrets. But as the bourbon level dropped in the bottle, the questions became more personal, the dares more intimate.

“Avery,” Ethan said after Tyler had just completed a dare to remove his shirt and do ten push-ups, “truth or dare?”

Avery hesitated, her eyes slightly unfocused from the alcohol. “Truth.”

“Have you ever been attracted to someone besides Tyler since you’ve been married?”

The question hung in the air. Tyler held his breath, watching his wife intently.

Avery’s eyes flicked briefly to Ethan then away. “Yes,” she admitted softly. “I have.”

“Who?” Ethan pressed.

“That’s another question,” she countered, taking a sip of her bourbon. “My turn. Tyler, truth or dare?”

“Dare,” Tyler said without hesitation.

Avery thought for a moment then smiled mischievously. “I dare you to let Ethan mix you a drink with whatever he wants, and you have to drink it all.”

As Ethan moved to the kitchen area to concoct what would surely be a potent mixture, Tyler caught Avery’s gaze. Something unspoken passed between them—a recognition of boundaries being tested, of possibilities opening up.

When Ethan returned with a disturbingly strong-smelling concoction, Tyler drank it without breaking eye contact with his wife.

Her eyes darkened as she watched him, and Tyler knew his plan was working. The careful groundwork he had laid over months of subtle suggestions, the selection of Ethan as their companion, the secluded setting—all of it was creating exactly the atmosphere of possibility he had envisioned.

“My turn,” Tyler said, setting down the empty glass. “Avery, truth or dare?”

“Dare,” Avery replied, surprising both men with her boldness. The bourbon had warmed her blood, loosening the careful restraint she typically maintained.

Something electric hummed in the air between the three of them, a current of possibility she couldn’t quite name but found herself drawn to nonetheless.

Tyler’s eyes gleamed with an intensity she rarely saw. “I dare you to let Ethan give you a shoulder massage. You’ve been complaining about tension there all week.”

It was such a simple request, innocent even, yet Avery felt the weight of something significant behind it. She met Tyler’s gaze, searching for any sign of hesitation or jealousy, but she found only encouragement.

“Okay,” she agreed, her voice softer than intended.

Ethan moved behind her on the sofa, hovering his hands just above her shoulders. “Is this really all right?” he asked, directing the question to both of them.

“More than all right,” Tyler confirmed, settling deeper into his armchair. “Avery works too hard. She deserves some pampering.”

Ethan’s hands descended on her shoulders, strong fingers finding knots of tension with surprising accuracy.

Avery couldn’t suppress a small gasp at the contact. His touch was different from Tyler’s—more tentative initially, then increasingly confident as he felt her relax into it.

“Is that good?” Ethan murmured.

“Very,” she admitted, eyes fluttering closed as his thumbs worked along her spine.

Tyler watched them, his expression unreadable in the firelight.

The game continued, but with a new undercurrent.

Each question, each dare, seemed designed to bring Avery and Ethan closer while Tyler observed from his position of apparent detachment.

Yet Avery sensed that her husband was anything but detached—his eyes missed nothing, his suggestions guided the evening with subtle precision.

When Ethan dared Avery to sit on his lap for the next round, Tyler nodded his approval before she could even look to him for guidance.

The shift in physical proximity changed something fundamental in the dynamic between them. Perched on Ethan’s lap, Avery became acutely aware of his body beneath hers, of the heat radiating through their clothes.

“Your turn, Tyler,” Ethan said, resting his hand lightly on Avery’s waist.

“I dare both of you,” Tyler said deliberately, “to show me what it would look like if you kissed.”

The cabin fell silent except for the crackling of the fire. Avery’s heart thundered in her chest. This wasn’t just a game anymore—this was something else entirely.

A realization dawned on her: Tyler had orchestrated this entire scenario, from the isolated cabin to Ethan’s unexpected arrival.

“Tyler,” she began, uncertain what she even wanted to say.

“It’s just a dare, Avery,” he said, his voice gentle but firm. “If you’re uncomfortable, you can always drink instead.”

But discomfort wasn’t what she felt. Confusion, yes. Surprise at Tyler’s suggestion, certainly. But beneath those emotions ran a current of excitement she couldn’t deny.

She turned to look at Ethan, finding his expression both questioning and heated. He wouldn’t make the move without her consent—she recognized that much in his eyes.

“It’s okay,” Tyler assured her from across the room. “I want to see it.”

Those words broke something open inside her. I want to see it. Not I don’t mind or I’ll allow it, but I want this. Her husband, her loving, seemingly conventional husband, was revealing desires she had never suspected he harbored.

With trembling fingers, Avery touched Ethan’s face. His stubble felt rough against her palm, so different from Tyler’s smooth skin. She hesitantly leaned forward, their lips meeting in what was meant to be a brief, perfunctory kiss to satisfy the dare.

But something ignited between them.

Ethan lifted his hand up to cradle the back of her head, and the kiss deepened, becoming something genuine and hungry.

Avery was startled by her own response, by the heat that flooded through her at this forbidden contact.

When they finally broke apart, both breathing heavily, her eyes immediately sought Tyler’s. Instead of jealousy or regret, she found him watching with undisguised arousal, his posture tense with anticipation rather than anger.

“Again,” Tyler said hoarsely. “Kiss her again, Ethan.”

This wasn’t just a fantasy for Tyler, Avery realized with stunning clarity.

This was a need—deep-seated and powerful.

And instead of feeling used or manipulated, she felt a rush of power.

Her husband, who had always been caring but somewhat passive in their relationship, was taking control in a way she’d never imagined possible.

And he was doing it by offering her a freedom she hadn’t known she wanted.

“Wait,” she said, suddenly standing from Ethan’s lap.

Both men looked at her, concern crossing their faces. But Avery wasn’t retreating.

She walked deliberately to Tyler, kneeling before his chair. “Is this what you want? Truly?”

Tyler cupped her face, his eyes burning with an intensity that made her breath catch. “I’ve never wanted anything more,” he confessed. “Seeing you with him, but knowing you’re mine—it’s everything I’ve fantasized about.”

“Why didn’t you tell me before?”

“I was afraid you’d think I was strange. That you wouldn’t understand.”

Avery leaned into his touch. “I’m understanding now,” she whispered.

She felt Ethan’s presence behind her, waiting. The three of them were suspended in this moment of decision.

Avery closed her eyes, sorting through the tangle of emotions coursing through her. Excitement. Fear. Curiosity. And beneath it all, a strange sense of liberation.

When she opened her eyes again, she had made her decision.

“Tell me what happens next,” she said to Tyler, surrendering control to him completely.

His smile was transformative—confident and masterful in a way she’d never seen before. This was a new Tyler, one who knew exactly what he wanted and how to get it.

“Go to him,” Tyler instructed, his voice low but commanding. “Show me how beautiful you look in another man’s arms.”

Avery rose, turning to face Ethan. The look they exchanged acknowledged the strangeness of this situation, but also the undeniable attraction that had always simmered beneath their friendly relationship.

As she moved toward Ethan, Avery felt as though she were stepping across an invisible boundary.

Whatever happened next would forever change her marriage, her sense of herself, her understanding of desire.

Yet instead of fear, she felt exhilarated.

Tyler had given her permission to explore a part of herself she’d kept rigidly controlled and, in doing so, had revealed a dominant side of himself that thrilled her.

Ethan opened his arms to her, but his eyes sought Tyler’s, receiving a nod of approval before he pulled Avery close. Their bodies fit together with a chemistry that surprised them both. He traced the curve of her spine, his hand coming to rest at the small of her back.

“You’re sure about this?” he murmured against her hair. “Both of you?”

“Very sure,” Tyler answered from his chair. “I want to watch you make my wife feel good, Ethan. I want to see her let go.”

Avery shivered at his words, at the command in his tone. This was her husband as she’d never seen him—confident, in control, orchestrating a scenario that somehow made her feel both vulnerable and powerful at once.

As Ethan’s lips found hers again, more demanding this time, Avery surrendered to the moment. She was vaguely aware of Tyler moving to sit on the edge of the sofa, close enough to observe every detail but maintaining enough distance to make it clear that, for now, she was Ethan’s to touch.

The boundaries between them blurred as the night deepened. Tyler’s voice guided them, sometimes instructing, sometimes simply appreciating what he saw. His words revealed how long he had fantasized about this moment, how carefully he had planned for it to happen.
