24 - My Best Friends Ex

“So, how come you and Becky broke up, anyway?” I asked, twirling my hair around my fingers.
In the screen of my computer, I could see the faint reflection of myself.
My pale skin, dusted with freckles, mostly untouched by the sunlight, was in stark contrast to Connor’s physique.
He was the type to be outside, no matter what the weather.
His sun-kissed skin. fresh as morning dew, always on the go, whether it was climbing, surfing, running, or riding.
There didn’t seem to be any physical activity he wasn’t interested in, although the thought of being that active made me shudder.
I liked being in the shadows, always had, surrounded by comfort and having everything within my reach. I knew I was betraying my evolutionary purpose, but surely that was the point of all this technological progress we had made, to do things that went against our nature?
He was stretched out in bed, using his laptop.
The clarity of the video call was good, although there were a few moments when his body froze because of lag.
He had his arms stretched behind his head.
I could see the hint of his swollen muscles, and this made me shudder, as well, although in the opposite manner to the thought of exercise.
Connor was Becky’s ex. Becky, my best friend, who was more a sister to me than anything else.
I had always gotten on well with Connor, and after they had broken up, we had continued chatting occasionally, though I hadn’t told Becky this.
I felt bad, but I figured that she was the one who had broken up with him, so it wasn’t like I was going against her wishes.
And we were just talking, anyway. Nothing else was going to happen.
I didn’t think I was Connor’s type. We were just talking, and what’s more is that we were separated by a computer screen. It was just a way to pass the time.
Connor smirked, a lopsided smile that was endearing. He brushed a lock of black hair away from his forehead. “I’m surprised she hasn’t told you.”
“No, she’s been surprisingly coy about it. I’m not quite sure why. Usually, she has no problem with telling me anything.”
“Well, what did she tell you about our actual relationship?” he asked.
I shrugged, not quite sure what he meant by this.
“I mean, she said that she was having a lot of fun and that you were a great guy. For a while, she said that you brought out the best in her. That’s why I was so surprised when you guys broke up.
She seemed to really enjoy being more active, and you could see that she gained a lot of benefit from it. It just all came out of the blue.”
“Well, you never can tell what goes on behind closed doors. I guess she wasn’t really as happy as she seemed.”
“But, why? Did something happened? You weren’t a jerk to her, were you? Because, if so …”
Connor laughed. “No, no, I wasn’t a jerk. We just ended up wanting different things.”
“Like what? Marriage? Kids? I didn’t think those were in her plans.”
Connor laughed again, but this time it was more out of nervousness than anything else. He averted his gaze from me and brought his hands down to rest across his chest. It wasn’t like him to be this cagey.
“You know, sometimes things just end, and there aren’t any good explanations. The relationship just ran its course. What about you, anyway? Are you seeing someone?”
My throat clenched, and my cheeks flushed crimson. No, of course I wasn’t seeing anyone. He must have known that. Maybe I deserved it for peppering him with questions. I had never been the type to see people. I had had boyfriends before, but nothing that lasted. I tended to prefer my own company.
“Don’t try to change the subject on me, Connor,” I said with a smile, trying to project a false sense of bravado. “You still haven’t answered my question.”
This time, Connor ran a full hand through his hair. “Angie, you know that I usually have no problem in speaking about anything, but this time … I mean, it’s not just me I have to think about; it’s Becky, as well. I don’t know if she’d want me to share intimate details of our relationship.”
His response only made it more certain in my mind that there was something else going on. Becky acted the same way whenever I asked her. I wasn’t used to being kept out of the loop, and a part of me just needed to know.
“I promise I won’t tell. I can keep a secret,” I said. “Besides, I’m sure Becky wouldn’t mind. It’s not as though she hasn’t told me secrets before. And if you don’t tell me, then I’m just going to have to assume that one of you cheated on the other.”
“Angie …”
“I mean, what else am I to believe? You two were great together, and then one day it suddenly all just ends …”
“I really don’t think we should be talking about this, Angie. Let’s do something else, anything else. I’ll even do a trick for you, if you want. Come on; I get that you want to know, so to make it up to you, I’ll do anything you like. All you have to do is ask,” he said.
Suddenly, tension gripped me. I leaned forward a little, gazing at him, wondering if he knew what he was opening himself up for. I stared into his eyes, hoping that I could glean some hidden meaning. Did he truly know what he was doing?
Warm arousal drifted within me, rising through my body and making it feel as though the heat in the room was stifling.
Beads of sweat prickled on my skin. I had this gorgeous guy offering to do anything for me.
He was sitting right there, in his bed, dressed in slacks and a white T-shirt, his hot body waiting for me to gaze upon it.
I had seen pictures of him online when he was out exercising, not that I was going to tell him that one of my nightly activities was scrolling through his profile and ogling him as though he was some stud in a magazine.
An ache throbbed in the molten core of me, my hand twitched, tempted to delve down there and touch myself as I had for so often when thinking about him.
This wasn’t the time for that, though. This wasn’t some strange fantasy. This was reality, and if I asked him to do what I wished, then he might think I was weird or crazy. I mean, who asked their best friend’s ex to strip for them?
And yet, he was there, waiting for me to ask him, and he had offered to do anything for me. The words swam on my tongue, waiting to burst free, but I just couldn’t summon them. The silence descended upon me, and I felt heavy, as though I was being suffocated.
“Well, Angie, what are you going to ask me to do? I’m completely at your disposal,” he said. There was that slanted smile again, the one he wore so often, the one that said he knew something that I didn’t, that he had some hidden insight into the world that I could truly not fathom.
I gulped. I could already feel myself trembling. I knew what I was going to do. I was going to do the same thing I always did when faced with something that involved taking a risk. I was going to shy away and stammer an excuse to leave and return to the safe cocoon of solitude.
Except, this time, that didn’t happen. This time, my mind acted of its own accord, and it made the word slip out before I realized what was happening.
“Strip,” I said so softly that it was a whisper.
Connor leaned forward. “What was that?” he asked.
I didn’t know if he truly hadn’t heard me or if he was only pretending. I could have taken that as an opportunity to stop things right then and there. I could have just left things as they were, but there was this thing inside me, as though I was being possessed by some wild energy.
“I said, you should strip for me,” the words tumbled out of me, each one stronger than the last. Nerves bubbled inside me, afraid of what was going to happen next.
He could look disgusted and aghast, and tell me that I’m a freak.
He might tell Becky, and my friendship could be in tatters.
I could become a social pariah as people became aware that I had some sick intense desires.
But none of that happened.
He continued to smirk. “I thought you were never going to ask.”
He then placed his laptop on the bed in front of him and adjusted his position so that he was sitting before it cross-legged. He spread his arms around himself then peeled away his shirt.
I watched, so shocked that this was happening, and yet so delighted, as well.
Inch by inch, his flesh was exposed. Such perfect flesh on a perfect man, each angle of his body chiseled as though a master sculptor had been at work.
There was a light dusting of hair on his chest and his forearms, while his abs were well defined.
It almost seemed cruel that I could look but not touch.
My heart skipped a beat, and a haze fell upon me as he stretched out his arms then curled them back, showing off his biceps. Something fluttered inside me. My breaths deepened, and I leaned forward, drawn to the screen as though it was magnetic.
He then stood up and twisted the laptop so that it was turned in the other direction. I could see his body towering above the screen, every perfect inch of him.
“Would you like to see more?” he asked.
“Yes … yes, please, I would,” I said, my words soft, afraid that I might say something that would crack the fragile reality of this moment.
I almost couldn’t believe that this was happening.
Was I dreaming? No … the heat that prickled on my skin was too real to ignore.
The twitching between my legs was too aching.
The tense knot that twisted in my gut sent me reeling.
It was all so incredible. It was all so real.
I just … oh my word, it left me breathless.
