29 - The Viking Horde

I’d always been called Gem, a shortened form of Gemma, because my parents thought I was a miracle.
It was tough to live up to their expectations.
When I was younger, I was in all the clubs—ballet, cheer leading, gymnastics, debate, drama …
and the list goes on. I guess they thought if they kept trying to put me in the spotlight, then I’d eventually develop some talent and become a star.
It never happened, though. I could see the hope in their eyes dying as I got older and graduated from high school without even a TV advertisement.
I feel bad for them in a way because I don’t like to think about how much money they spent on me, money that went spiraling down the drain.
But that was their choice. I never wanted that. I just wanted to be left alone.
Even after high school, they still wanted me to go and do some acting courses, as though the only way I could be successful in life was to be in front of the silver screen or standing on stage with the spotlight beaming down on me.
They never listened to me when I told them that I didn’t want that.
They kept brushing my concerns away, saying that I didn’t really know what I wanted, or that I was going to fall in love with it eventually.
It’s like those people who kept trying to get me to drink beer, telling me the more I drank, the more I’d like it.
But, why? Why do anything that brings you nothing but distaste?
Anyway, I knew I had to leave home to break free of their dreams.
All my life, I had been living the way they wanted me to, meaning that I didn’t get a chance to figure out what I wanted. All I knew was that I wanted to get as far away from America as I could and to change my look.
From a young age, Mom had dyed my hair so that I could be a “golden child.” People always said I shone as bright as a diamond, but I never felt like that.
I’d let the dye grow out, and let me tell you that was a furious argument with my mom, but now I had a silky coat of raven hair, as dark as coal, and it matched my smoldering eyes.
I was still flexible, thanks to my years as a gymnast, but that all had to be put behind me once I hit puberty as my body suddenly woke up. Hello, curves!
I ended up going to Iceland. I wasn’t sure what made me chose Iceland in particular.
It just seemed isolated and far away from the gaze of the world, almost as though it was a country that lived in the shadows, and I knew I would never have to fear being found by anyone or forced to do anything I didn’t want to do.
It was a beautiful country, far different than America.
But I fell in love with it at first sight, and once the travel bug had bitten me, I wasn’t sure that I ever wanted to return to America, not that I told my parents this, because they would have had a heart attack.
But it was time for me to begin keeping secrets from my parents.
I finally had a part of my life that wasn’t controlled by them, and that had none of their influence at all. This was all me, and I was ready to embrace the adventure of the world, no matter where it took me, because I only had one life, and a lot of it had been wasted already.

Since I had no way of making money, and I wasn’t so carefree as to head to a new country without having a job prospect, I had arranged to become a housekeeper during my time in Iceland.
The pay wasn’t great, but I had a room and was given a meal allowance, so it didn’t bother me that much.
It was clear from when I arrived that the nightlife in Iceland wasn’t much to write home about, so it wasn’t as though I needed a bunch of cash on hand.
The sky was filled with a rolling mist, and the nights descended quickly and abruptly, as though a blanket had suddenly been pulled across the world.
The night sky was one of the most beautiful I had ever seen though.
The stars glittered, as though diamonds had been sewn into obsidian fabric.
I looked up in awe. I was also in awe of the house in which I was staying.
Magnus lived there alone. It seemed to be far too big for one person, but he seemed to make it work.
Because of the sheer size, I rarely bumped into him, as we were always in different parts of the house.
He was a huge man, though, like a Viking come to life.
Even when I saw him in a suit, it looked as though the seams were going to burst apart because he was so muscular.
He was tall, too, and his long beard was straw colored. I felt so small compared to him.
This place was a land of gladiators and warriors, and they might as well have had the blood of giants in their ancestry. Sometimes, I could hear his deep, booming laugh thundering through the house, and it sent reverberations through my soul.
There was a chef employed to cook the meals, but I didn’t speak to him much. There were a few other servants, as well, but I mostly kept to myself.
Whenever I saw Magnus, he smiled at me and was always kind.
I didn’t know what he did for a living. In fact, I didn’t know much.
I just got on with my work, which involved cleaning the house and making sure everything was neat and tidy.
It was hardly the glamorous life that my parents wanted for me, but I was happy to be humble and wouldn’t have changed a thing.
It wasn’t as though I was going to do this forever.
The only strange thing that piqued my curiosity was a door to a room that I was not allowed in. Magnus had spoken to me seriously about this when I had started. He stood in front of me and pointed toward me with one of his large, thick fingers and spoke in a stern tone.
“That room is private and off limits. It is always locked. Do not attempt to find the key. Do not attempt to enter,” he’d said.
I assumed there was something sensitive in there. On one occasion, I had bent down to peer through the keyhole for a moment, but the room had been dark, and I hadn’t been able to make out anything. My mind was alive with wild thoughts.
What if he was holding someone in there? What if there was a monster? It was creepy, but it added to the excitement of my days as I used to wonder if a monster would creep out in the depths of night while everyone was asleep.
I never dared ask Magnus what was in the room, though, nor did I ever try to sneak a key away to unlock it. I just had to wonder …

One evening I was minding my own business in my room after my shift was over, flicking through a magazine that I had bought at the store.
It was all in Icelandic, of course, but I thought I could try to teach myself the language and, failing that, the pictures amused me.
A knock at the door interrupted my thoughts, and I frowned, wondering who could be visiting me. It wasn’t as though I had any friends.
I was just wearing a loose top that left one shoulder exposed and ran down to the middle of my thighs.
When I opened the door, Magnus was standing there, his huge body filling the door frame.
I was in awe of him, and the air was hot with tension.
I wasn’t sure if I wanted him or feared him.
He was just so huge and powerful that I couldn’t help but think what it would be like to be dragged away by him, bent over a table, and fucked silly.
Mother would have told me to compose myself.
I swallowed a lump in my throat and tried to ignore the waves of heat that were radiating through me.
Magnus’s gaze lingered on me. I watched his gaze flick down to my cleavage and my legs, drinking me in.
I played with strands of my hair. I wasn’t expressly trying to seduce him, but the nights were long, and I figured I might as well try to have some experiences that I would never be able to replicate at home. Being screwed by a Viking was certainly something that I would never forget.
“How can I help you, Magnus?” I asked in a soft, lilting voice, trying to make myself seem as gentle as possible. I had to tilt my neck up to look at him, and this had the side effect of accentuating my cleavage. I don’t think he minded, though. I certainly didn’t.
“Are you busy tonight, Gem?” he asked. His English was good, and the accent with which he spoke caused a rumbling in the pit of my stomach.
It was just so manly and hard. He seemed like the kind of man who could wrest destiny and bend fate to his whims. My heart quickened at the thought of what his hands could do to me, as well.
“I didn’t have any plans, other than lounging about in bed,” I said, gesturing to my bed with the ruffled sheets.
I had been in his bedroom. He had a huge four poster bed.
The mattress was hard, like him, and he was so big he must have taken up all of it.
I wondered if he was going to insist on joining me as another of my maidly tasks.
I wouldn’t have refused him if he did. Maybe that made me a slut, but I didn’t care.
If he snapped his fingers, I would have fallen to my knees and let my mouth fall open.
“Well, I’m having a few friends over tonight, and I just wanted to warn you that things might get a bit loud, so don’t be scared. I was also wondering if you might make an appearance. None of them have ever met an American before, and they are quite intrigued by you,” he said.
My hopes deflated a little at the sound of this, because I had hoped he wanted me for something more, but I smiled sweetly at him, anyway, and told him that of course I would be honored to make an appearance.
“I was hoping you would say that, so I bought you a little something. I hope you don’t mind,” he said, presenting a lovely sapphire gown that sparkled like a sun-soaked sea. I had no idea how much it had set him back, but it must have been expensive.
I held it against my body. The fabric was soft and silky, and it seemed to be a perfect fit. He was a good judge of my body.
