Chapter Ten
WHEN THE SAUCE HITS THE PAN
Hissing. That’s all I hear around me when I crouch beside Casey to check on him. He’s coughing and spluttering but his face has returned to its normal color.
A loud crash pulls my attention, and I see Pizza Man throw—literally throw, as if he weighs nothing—another man into a table. It splinters on impact, chairs flying in every direction.
Another man staggers near the wall. A massive man-shaped hole gapes in the drywall behind him. Dust and plaster coat his clothes as he lifts his head.
Red eyes.
Fangs.
A hiss slips between them.
My stomach drops.
Okay.
So Pizza Man isn’t the only one with fangs.
Fang-fucking-tastic.
“Fuck…” croaks Casey beside me and that pulls the very intense fanged guy’s attention toward us. His nostrils flare and another hiss sounds from him.
But instead of sounding angry, the sound is almost eager.
My stomach drops.
That's somehow worse.
I catch the bunch of his muscles a split second before he's suddenly inches from my face, as though I blinked him there.
“You smell delicious, little flower. Sweet enough to make a man forget himself.”
Every instinct I have starts screaming.
Not because of the words.
Because of the way he says them.
Like he's already imagining what I taste like.
Casey staggers in front of me before I can stop him, planting himself between me and Red-Eyes.
“Get away from her,” he wheezes, the words sounding strangled in his bruised windpipe rather than intimidating.
“Daisy! OUT!”
Pizza Man's roar echoes through the restaurant.
Which is weirdly concerning coming from the guy who just tried to strangle my best friend.
A crash sounds behind Red-Eyes.
Then another.
I decide maybe now is an excellent time to listen to every alarm bell that's been screaming at me for the past couple of days.
Grabbing a fistful of Casey's shirt, I yank him backward while bolting for the door.
Except it’s a pull door.
Not a panic-and-throw-yourself-through-it door.
Well, fuck.
