Epilogue - 1 Year Later
Emily
The sun was just beginningto rise over the turquoise waters of Tulum, casting a golden glow across the pristine sands. I stood on the balcony of our beachfront bungalow, a soft breeze playing through my hair. I gaze out at the horizon, a sense of serenity washing over me. It had been a year since Gavin and I had started our relationship along these very beaches and here we are, back to where it all began.
Gavin’s arms wrap around me from behind, his chin resting on my shoulder. “Good morning, beautiful,” he murmured, his voice a warm rumble in my ear.
“Good morning,” I replied, leaning back in his embrace. “Can you believe that we’re back here?”
He kisses my cheek softly, “Well, you planned this trip. But you know, time flies when you’re with the person who you love.”
We spent the morning lazily, enjoying a breakfast of fresh tropical fruits and pastries on our balcony. The sounds of the ocean created a peaceful soundtrack to our conversation, punctuated by laughter, a touch, and the occasional kiss.
By mid-morning, we were ready for adventure. We rented bikes and rode through the lush jungles, the warm sun filtering through the canopy above. We visited ancient Mayan ruins along the shores overlooking the glistening waters. We marveled at the history and the sights in front of us. Despite revisiting familiar paths, everything had a fresh feel to it.
After our exploration, we found a secluded beach, hidden away from the more crowded spots. Gavin brought a blanket and spread it out for us. We lay down together with his arm around me and my head nestled against his shoulder as the rhythmic sound of the waves lulled us into a state of blissful relaxation. We swam in the clear, cool waters, playfully splashing with one another and floating hand in hand, the world beyond the beach fading into insignificance.
As the afternoon sun dipped lower in the sky, we returned to our bungalow to freshen up. Gavin had arranged for a private dinner on the beach, casting a soft romantic glow. Gavin stood up and held out his hand to me.
“Come with me,” he said, his eyes sparkling with mischief and emotion that I couldn’t place.
While we walked together, darkness fell. Lanterns illuminated the beach, casting a soft, romantic glow. Gavin held out his hand to me as he led me to the edge of the water, where the gentle waves lapped at our feet. The moon had risen, casting a silvery light over the scene. Gavin turned to face me, taking both of my hands in his.
“Em. This past year has been one of the most incredible years of my life,” he began, his voice steady but filled with emotion. “Being with you has shown me what true happiness feels like. We work well together, in and out of the workplace. We now have technically been on two vacations with one another and if I say so myself, I’ve had a great time. You’ve been my rock, my confidant, my everything. My earthquake.”
My breath caught in my throat as he dropped to one knee, pulling a small box from his pocket. He opened it to reveal a stunning ring; the diamond catching the moonlight and sparkling brilliantly.
“Emily, will you do the honor of marrying me, becoming my wife?” Gavin asked me, his eyes searching mine, filled with hope and love.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I nodded, my voice choked with emotion. “Yes, Gavin, yes!”
He slipped the ring onto my finger and stood, lifting me into his arms as I laughed and cried at the same time. He spun me around, our joy echoing across the beach, mingling with the sounds of the waves.
As we kissed, the world around us paused.
This was a perfect day, a perfect vacation, a perfect moment, and the beginning of our forever.
