CHAPTER FORTY-THREE The Call She Did Not Make
Andre texted Sunday morning.Andre: It was good seeing you.
I'm heading back northtoday. I hope the conversation gave you some peace.
Maya read the message while standing barefoot in herkitchen. Her first impulse was to tell him she saw his family.
Your daughter looks like you.Simone seems beautiful.I cried when I heard her call you Daddy.None of those sentences belonged in his morning.
Maya typed:It did. Thank you for meeting me.
Safe flight. She stared at the screen. Then added:You have a beautiful life, Andre.
Take care of it. Her thumb hovered over Send. The line sounded too loaded. She deleted it.Maya: It did.
Thank you for meeting me. Safe flighthome.Andre: Thank you.
Take care, Maya. That was all.Maya placed the phone on the counter.A minute later she picked it up again. She opened his contact. For years, Andre's name had lived there like a secretemergency number. She did not block him.She did something harder.Nothing.No final paragraph. No request for friendship. No promise to meet someday.Maya let the conversation end where it ended.
At noon, she went to brunch with Tasha."You look wrecked," Tasha said.
"I keep attracting very compassionate people.
" "You're welcome."Maya told her about the park.Tasha's expression softened.
"You didn't go over?""No.""Good."Maya stared.
"My mother said the same thing." "Your mother and I are starting a coalition.
"Maya smiled. Then she showed Tasha the short text exchange.
"I wanted to say more," Maya admitted."Of course.
""I wanted him to know seeing him mattered.
" "He knows.""How?""Because he knows you.
"Maya looked down.Tasha reached across the table.
"You don't have to make every goodbye unforgettable.Sometimes the kindest goodbye is the one that doesn'tdemand another response.
"Maya squeezed her hand. That afternoon, she deleted Andre's old voicemail fromthe cloud archive where she had kept it for years.
Not because the voice meant nothing.Because she no longer needed proof that it oncebelonged to her life.
