CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE The Award

The agency's biggest award came on a rainy night in downtown Los Angeles.

Maya stood beneath stage lights in a black dress, holding a glass trophy that was heavier than it looked, while a ballroom full of people applauded a campaign she had nearly quit twice.

Years earlier, she would have searched the room for one face.Andre's.Then later, during the Jalen chapter, she would have wondered whether Jalen was watching from somewhere else and regretting losing her. That night, Maya looked toward her table.Tasha was standing, cheering too loudly.

Denise was crying with no attempt to hide it.

Julian had both hands raised as if Maya had won a championship.Maya laughed. The moment belonged to everyone who had loved her, but it did not require one man's witness to become real.At the microphone, she thanked her team, her clients, her mother, and the women who had mentored her when she was young enough to think confidence meant never admitting uncertainty. Then she paused.

"I used to think success meant getting the life I pictured when I was twenty," she said.

"I'm grateful life had better imagination than I did.

"The line surprised even her.Afterward, people crowded around with hugs and photographs.Julian waited until they were alone near the elevator.

"That speech was good," he said."I blacked out after the second sentence.

""You thanked everybody except me."Maya stared at him.Julian held the serious expression for two seconds, then laughed. She shoved his shoulder.

"Don't play with me.""I was testing whether you still scare easily.

""You almost died at an awards dinner."He kissed her forehead.

"I'm proud of you."Maya looked at him."Thank you.

"There was no hidden demand in his praise.

No sense that he needed to be the reason for her happiness. On the ride home, rain streaked the windows.Maya thought of the girl at eighteen who believed love meant being chosen by the person she wanted most. She thought of the woman at thirty-five who believed following her heart meant obeying the strongest feeling in the room. She thought of herself now.Love had become less theatrical.More honest. And strangely, more beautiful.
