Chapter Twenty-Eight — Keep Your Promise
RONAN
Ronan felt Elliot change beneath his hand.
Not gradually. One second Elliot stood beside him staring at the photograph of Claire tied to a chair.
The next, every muscle in his body went rigid.
The transformation was becoming familiar.
Fear disappeared first. Then hesitation.
Then everything soft. What remained was focus.
Cold. Precise. Dangerous. Ronan tightened his grip around Elliot’s wrist.
“No.”
Elliot didn’t look at him. Claire’s photograph remained on Detective Vance’s phone. Alive. Bound. No blood. No visible injuries. The words painted behind her filled most of the wall.
GOOD BOYS KEEP THEIR PROMISES.
Beneath them: LET’S SEE IF YOURS CAN. Ronan knew exactly who the second line belonged to. Him. Not Elliot. Saint had stopped speaking to the killer. Now they were speaking to the person trying to control him.
“Elliot.”
Nothing. Ronan stepped closer.
“Look at me.”
Still nothing. Vance lowered the phone.
“Do you recognize the room?”
Elliot finally moved. Not toward Ronan. Toward the door. Ronan caught him around the waist.
“Absolutely fucking not.”
“Let go.”
His voice was quiet. That scared Ronan more than yelling.
“No.”
“Ronan.”
“You promised.”
Elliot stopped. There. Tiny. Enough. Ronan kept his arm around him.
“No mask.”
Elliot’s jaw tightened.
“No weapon.”
Silence.
“No killing.”
His head turned. Slowly. Their eyes met.
“She’s tied to a fucking chair.”
“I can see that.”
“They took her because of me.”
“Yes.”
“They followed her before because of me.”
“I know.”
“If they hurt her—”
“They haven’t.”
“Yet.”
Ronan’s stomach tightened. He hated that word too. Vance stepped closer.
“Claire’s alive in the photograph. We need to preserve that advantage.”
Elliot looked at her.
“Advantage.”
“Yes.”
“She’s leverage.”
“Yes.”
“Against me.”
“Yes.”
Ronan felt Elliot’s body tense again. Vance did too. She continued carefully.
“Which means Saint needs her alive until they get whatever reaction they want.”
Elliot laughed once. Cold.
“You’re assuming they’re rational.”
“I’m assuming they’re deliberate.”
That landed. Ronan felt it. Elliot understood deliberate. Probably better than anyone in the room. Vance held up the photograph again.
“This was staged.”
Elliot stared.
“The wording. The chair. The wall. Whoever took Claire expected us to analyze it.”
Ronan frowned.
“Us?”
Vance looked at him.
“All of us.”
Then at Elliot.
“But mostly you two.”
The words settled badly. Saint knew Elliot. Knew Ronan. Knew enough about them to turn their relationship into part of the crime scene. Ronan looked at the photograph again. Claire wore jeans and a Bellweather sweatshirt. Her hair was loose around her face. No gag. Interesting.
“She can talk.”
Vance looked at him.
“What?”
“No gag.”
Elliot’s attention sharpened. Ronan pointed.
“If Saint didn’t want her talking, they’d cover her mouth.”
Vance nodded slowly.
“Maybe.”
“Or they want her to say something.”
Elliot looked at him. There. That little shift. He had followed the thought. Vance enlarged the photograph. Claire’s hands. Chair. Wall. Floor. Nothing obvious.
“Could be another video coming,” she said.
Elliot stepped closer. Ronan let him. Not toward the door. Toward the evidence. Good.
“Background.”
Vance looked at him.
“What?”
“The wall.”
White-painted concrete. A thin vertical seam ran behind Claire’s shoulder. Electrical conduit climbed the right side. No windows. Industrial. Ronan leaned closer.
“Basement?”
“Maybe,” Vance said.
Elliot shook his head.
“No.”
Both looked.
“Why?”
“The light.”
Ronan frowned.
“What about it?”
“Too even.”
Elliot pointed toward the shadow beneath Claire’s chair.
“Overhead fluorescents. Probably commercial.”
“Basements have fluorescent lights.”
“Yes, but look at the floor.”
Smooth gray concrete. Painted lines. Ronan saw it. A narrow faded stripe passed beneath one chair leg. Yellow. Parking? Warehouse? Vance zoomed.
“Could be an old storage facility.”
Elliot looked toward her.
“Bellweather has six.”
“How do you know?”
He almost smiled.
“Psychology robot.”
Ronan stared. Elliot caught himself.
“Sorry.”
Vance ignored them.
“I’ll have locations pulled.”
She started typing. Ronan felt Elliot shift beside him. Restless. Energy looking for somewhere to go. He took Elliot’s hand. Elliot looked down. Ronan didn’t release. Not romantic. Not exactly. Anchor.
“Stay.”
Elliot’s fingers tightened.
“I’m staying.”
“For now.”
Elliot stared. Ronan held his gaze.
“Promise.”
The word worked differently now. It hurt Elliot. Ronan could see it. Good. Not because Ronan wanted pain. Because Elliot took promises seriously when they came from him.
“I promise.”
Ronan believed him. Mostly. That would have to be enough.
At 11:08, Bellweather Police locked down three abandoned commercial properties.
At 11:14, campus security began searching every university-owned storage building.
At 11:21, Claire’s phone came back online.
For fourteen seconds. Vance received the alert while standing at the carriage-house island.
“Got something.”
Everyone moved. Ronan looked over her shoulder. A map appeared. Small blue pulse. West Bellweather. Then gone.
“Where?”
Vance zoomed.
“Industrial district.”
Elliot’s grip tightened around Ronan’s hand. Ronan stared at the map. Warehouses. Old manufacturing buildings. A self-storage complex. An abandoned supermarket.
“What was the accuracy?”
“About eighty meters.”
Elliot leaned closer.
“Which buildings?”
Vance listed them. Four possibilities. Then another message arrived. Not on Vance’s phone. The temporary phone Ronan had been using. Unknown number. His stomach dropped. Elliot saw.
“Saint.”
Ronan opened it. Video. Twenty-three seconds. Vance immediately said, “Don’t play it yet.” Ronan stared.
“Why?”
“I want screen recording active.”
Of course. Evidence. She set up another phone. Then nodded. Ronan pressed play. Claire appeared. Same chair. Same wall. She was crying now. Not hysterically. Quietly. Angrily. Very Claire. Ronan’s chest tightened. Someone stood behind the camera. No voice. Claire looked directly into the lens.
“Elliot.”
Beside Ronan, Elliot stopped breathing. Claire swallowed.
“If you’re seeing this, don’t do anything stupid.”
Ronan almost laughed despite the terror. Elliot did not. Claire continued.
“I’m okay.”
Her voice shook.
“But listen to me.”
She looked slightly off-camera. Someone had moved. Ronan could tell. Then back.
“They want you to come alone.”
Elliot’s hand jerked inside Ronan’s. No. Ronan tightened his grip. Claire continued.
“Don’t.”
Good.
“They said if police come—”
She stopped. Fear crossed her face. The first real fear. Ronan felt cold.
“They said they’ll know.”
Then someone spoke. Distorted. Not Nathan. Same kind of device. Different cadence.
“Tell him the rest.”
Claire looked away from the camera.
“Fuck you.”
Ronan almost smiled. Elliot whispered, “Claire.” The distorted voice laughed softly. Then:
“Good girl.”
Elliot’s face changed. Ronan saw rage ignite. He grabbed Elliot’s wrist with both hands.
“Promise.”
Elliot stared at the screen. Claire continued.
“They said you have forty-five minutes.”
Vance looked at the timestamp. The video had been sent less than a minute after recording. Claire swallowed.
“They want you at…”
She looked off-camera again.
“Mercy Storage. Unit twelve.”
Vance immediately began typing. Ronan’s pulse jumped. Selfstorage complex. One of the four buildings. Claire continued.
“Elliot, don’t—”
The video cut. Silence. Nobody moved for one second. Then Vance said:
“Police are already moving.”
Elliot tore his hand free. Ronan stepped in front of him.
“No.”
“They gave an address.”
“Yes.”
“For me.”
“Yes.”
“So I’m going.”
“No.”
“You don’t get to decide that.”
“I absolutely fucking do when the alternative is you walking into a serial killer’s trap.”
Elliot laughed bitterly.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“You keep forgetting what I am.”
Ronan’s stomach tightened.
“No.”
“I know traps.”
“That does not make you bulletproof.”
“I didn’t say—” “No.” Ronan moved closer.
“You are not going alone.” “Claire said they’ll know if police come.
” “They already know police are involved.” “You don’t know that.
” “Vance is standing in our kitchen.” “That’s not the same.
” Vance stepped between them verbally before Ronan physically did something stupid.
“Mercy Storage has exterior cameras.” Elliot looked at her.
“Live?” “Yes.” “Can Saint see them?” “Possibly.” “Then if cruisers roll up—” “They won’t.
” Elliot stopped. Vance continued. “Plainclothes. Unmarked vehicles. Perimeter first.” Ronan looked toward her.
“You’re actually considering letting him go?
” “No.” “Good.” Elliot glared. Vance ignored both.
“But Saint expects Elliot.” “So?” “So if nobody resembling Elliot approaches, Claire may be at greater risk.” Ronan felt his stomach drop.
“No.” Elliot looked at him. Vance continued.
“I am not sending him inside.” “Then what?” “We use him.” Elliot almost smiled.
Ronan did not. “Absolutely not.” “Ronan.” “No.” “You’re not his attorney.
” “No, apparently I’m the only person in this fucking house who remembers Saint wants him to react. ”
Elliot stared. That was the point. Ronan continued.
“Everything Saint has done is about getting Elliot to prove something.”
Vance went still. Ronan could see her thinking.
“Tyler,” he said.
Elliot’s eyes snapped toward him.
“Good boy.”
Vance’s attention sharpened.
“The knife.”
Ronan kept going.
“Nathan. Dylan. The bedroom. Claire.”
Vance stared.
“They reward and punish him.”
Elliot’s jaw tightened.
“Ronan.”
“No. She needs to hear it.”
Another thread leaving their hands. Dangerous. Necessary. Ronan forced himself onward.
“Saint doesn’t just want Elliot at that storage unit.”
“What do they want?” Vance asked.
Ronan looked at Elliot. Then said it.
“They want him to kill someone.”
Silence. Elliot’s face closed. Vance looked between them.
