Extract From Notebook 4
I haven’t laughed so much in ages, Nell. You were in a complete panic on your way to the bus stop. I’m pleased that you’re aware of me, that you seem to know when I’m following you. It makes everything so much more fun.
I didn’t hang around while you waited for your bus, it was enough that I’d ruined your day.
It had been going so well, not just for you but also for me.
I was able to take an unexpectedly long lunch hour and I decided to make the most of it by going to your workplace to see if I could spot you through the window.
The truth is, I miss you when I haven’t seen you for a while.
I couldn’t believe my luck when you came out of the building not long after I arrived.
I followed you to a coffee shop and I presumed you were going to get a takeout.
But once you had your order, you moved to a table by the window, so I crossed over to the tearoom on the other side of the street and ordered myself a coffee and a sandwich.
It was crowded, but I managed to squeeze myself onto a little stool near the front of the shop, where I had an almost perfect view of you.
I couldn’t work out what you were having with your coffee. It didn’t look like a sandwich, it seemed to be either a croissant or a pain au chocolat and I wondered if you were partial to cinnamon buns, as I am.
Not that it matters. We’ll hardly be discussing our favorite pastries when I kill you.
