The palace felt different after that night in the Hall of Shadows.

Yue Lian's days settled into an uneasy rhythm, tending the recovering soldier, preparing her herbal poultices, and stealing moments of quiet at her window, staring at the distant gardens she was forbidden to visit.

The memory of green light and Cang Yan's probing, frustrated power lingered like a bruise on her heart.

Zheng Yu became her constant companion, slipping through locked doors and past suspicious guards with the ease of someone who'd spent his life defying rules.

He brought her sweet cakes wrapped in silk napkins, told her stories of palace intrigue, and regaled her with tales of the White Fox Twins' latest mischief.

One day, they swapped the Demon Lord's ink for invisible paint; the next, they chased a flock of spirit cranes through the library, feathers and scrolls flying everywhere.

One afternoon, as they lounged on the windowsill sharing candied lotus seeds, Yue Lian watched Zheng Yu with growing curiosity.

His laughter came so easily, yet he moved with the confidence of someone who belonged in this dangerous place.

She lowered her voice, glancing at the closed door.

"Zheng Yu... why aren't you afraid of Lord Cang Yan? Everyone else seems to be."

He paused mid-bite, looking out at the garden before answering.

"Ah. That's a long story, but I suppose you've earned it."

He grinned, his sharp canines flashing, but his voice was softer than usual.

"When I was a pup, I was starving on the edge of the Spirit Beast Realm. Most would have left me; foxes aren't exactly respected here. But Cang Yan found me. He brought me to the palace, fed me scraps from his own table, taught me to fight, to read, to survive. He never treated me like a servant.

Sometimes he'd even let me sleep beside the fire in winter. We... grew up together, in a way. Like brothers."

Yue Lian watched him, surprised by the tenderness in his words, the sudden vulnerability. "You care about him."

He shrugged, but his eyes were serious. "He can be cruel, yes, and colder than a mountain stream, but he never forgot what it was to be alone. That's why I stand up to him. He'd never truly hurt me, and he knows I'd bite back if he tried."

He winked, mischief returning. "Besides, someone has to keep him humble."

She smiled, the knot in her chest loosening a little. "You're lucky, Zheng Yu. To have someone like that, even if he's difficult."

He nudged her shoulder. "You'd be surprised. You're braver than you think. Most mortals would be cowering under the bed by now."

Before Yue Lian could reply, the White Fox Twins burst into the room, their tails a blur of excitement.

"There you are!" the elder twin cried, leaping onto the bed.

"We just heard, there's trouble brewing in the north gardens. The spirit willows are wailing, and the gardeners say something's prowling the grounds at night."

The younger twin peered at Yue Lian with wide eyes. "They say it's an omen. That the moon is hiding something from the palace."

Zheng Yu shot them a sharp look. "You two are supposed to be on kitchen duty, not spreading rumors."

The twins only grinned wider and flopped onto the floor, clearly intent on hearing more from Yue Lian. She laughed, feeling lighter than she had in days. "If the moon is hiding secrets, maybe it just wants a little peace and quiet. I know I do."

The four of them fell into easy banter, the twins peppering Yue Lian with questions about mortal food, human music, and why she bothered with "boring old herbs." In their company, the palace felt almost warm, almost like a home.

But good moments never lasted long in the Demon Palace.

A bell tolled in the distance, low and ominous. Zheng Yu's ears perked up, eyes narrowing. "That's the council summons. Cang Yan doesn't call the court unless something's wrong."

The White Fox Twins jumped to their feet, tails bristling. "We should go listen at the door!"

Yue Lian's pulse quickened. "What does it mean?"

Zheng Yu's smile faded. "It means the immortals are on the move. There's trouble at the border, and trouble always finds its way here."

He squeezed her hand before slipping out after the twins, leaving Yue Lian alone with the echo of the bell and a thousand new worries blooming in her chest.

She looked out at the sky, the moon just peeking over the rooftops, and wondered what secrets it still held, about her, about the Demon Lord, and about the fate of all eight realms.
