The palace did not sleep after the attack.

Lanterns burned through the night, guards doubled at every door, and rumors thickened in the air like storm clouds.

Cang Yan stalked the halls, his anger a cold and silent force, demanding answers from every servant and guard.

But no one saw who had entered Yue Lian's chamber or how the enchanted ink had found its way inside.

The traitor had vanished, leaving only confusion and fear.

Yue Lian sat by her window, knees drawn to her chest, watching the moon drift behind clouds.

Her mind raced. The barrier had protected her, but its eruption had left her weak and shaken, and it had done nothing to reveal who she truly was.

The only thing she knew for certain was that she was a target, a pawn in a game she barely understood.

Zheng Yu and the White Fox Twins came to her room as dawn crept over the rooftops. Zheng Yu brought warm tea and a gentle smile. "They'll find the one who did this," he promised, but his eyes were shadowed with doubt. The twins curled on her bed, their tails limp, for once too subdued for jokes.

Yue Lian forced a grateful smile, but her heart was heavy. She felt as if she were drifting farther from everyone she cared about.

In the council chamber, Cang Yan faced his generals and advisors.

Their voices clashed in a heated argument, some demanding vengeance, others calling for caution.

Through it all, he sat silent, his face unreadable.

He had always been able to outmaneuver his enemies.

But now, with Yue Lian's safety threatened and her trust slipping away, he found himself at a loss.

He called for her, hoping for a private conversation before the day's end. When she entered, her expression was distant, her steps careful. He gestured for her to sit, but she remained standing, arms wrapped around herself.

"Small healer," he began, "I have failed to protect you. I promise, whoever did this will be found and punished."

She shook her head, voice quiet but full of pain. "You cannot keep me safe. No one can."

He tried to reach her, but the words caught in his throat. "You are under my protection. I have given my word."

She looked at him, her eyes shimmering with tears. "Your word? What does that mean, Lord Cang Yan? Protection, or possession? Every day I am here, more people suffer. More people get hurt. You bring nothing but disaster to those around you, whether you mean to or not."

He flinched, truly flinched, for the first time she had known him. "You think I want this chaos? That I want you or anyone else to suffer?"

"I don't know what you want," she whispered. "But I know what I want. I want to be free of this curse, of this palace, of the eyes watching me, waiting for me to become something I'm not. You say I am under your protection, but I feel more like a prisoner with every passing day."

She drew a trembling breath. "The Grandmasters have sent word. They say they can help me, help me discover who I am, and maybe how to control whatever is inside me. I want to choose for myself, and for once, not just react to what you or anyone else demands."

Cang Yan's jaw tightened. "You would trust them over me?"

She met his gaze, her voice shaking but firm. "I trust myself. And I trust that staying here... staying with you, will only bring more pain. For everyone."

He rose, face pale with anger and something rawer, something heartbreakingly vulnerable. "You do not know what they are capable of. They will use you, Yue Lian. Worse than any demon ever could."

"Maybe," she said, voice barely more than a whisper. "But I have to know for myself. I can't keep living in your shadow, waiting for disaster."

He took a step toward her, reaching out, as if to stop her, to beg, to command. But she stepped away, shaking her head. "Let me go, Cang Yan. Please."

She turned and left him standing in the empty chamber, the words he could not say dying on his lips. And for the first time, he seemed so vulnerable towards someone whom he had met not longer than one full moon ago.

Word spread quickly through the palace. The White Fox Twins confronted her at the gate, their eyes wide and shimmering with tears. "Don't go," the younger pleaded. "We'll help you find answers. The master can be awful, but... he's never tried this hard for anyone."

Zheng Yu hugged her tightly, his voice thick with sadness. "You're braver than anyone here, Yue Lian. But you don't have to do this alone. If you call for me, no matter where you are, I'll come."

She smiled at them, her heart aching. "Thank you. For making this place feel like home, even if just for a little while."

As the Grandmasters' envoy arrived to escort her, Yue Lian took one last look at the Demon Palace, at the strange family she was leaving behind. She felt as if she were stepping off the edge of the world.

Cang Yan watched from a high balcony, his face carved from stone, his hands clenched at his sides.

He did not call out. He did not stop her.

He simply watched as the only person to ever defy him disappeared into the mist, and wondered, for the first time in centuries, if power meant nothing without someone who would choose to stay.

That night, the palace felt emptier than it ever had.

Zheng Yu sat by the fire, the Fox Twins curled at his side.

In the darkness, Cang Yan stood alone in the moonlit hall, the silence pressing in.

For all his power, all his cunning, he could not command the one thing he truly wanted: for Yue Lian to come back.
