Chapter Twenty-Six

Levi

F alling felt like a crescendo. The final push before the end. The grand finale.

I knew it would end like this.

The ballad of Marigold told me so.

He gave his everything to be hers

He cast his heart upon the rock

After all my hunches about the cliff—about Ezra —this was how it should end.

Ezra caught himself at the edge. His gaze followed me down. Hopefully she wouldn’t see my end.

Marigold.

The girl who left me for my enemy and the one I never kissed properly.

The girl who wanted to fix me and who slept with my murderer.

The girl I created.

And the girl I loved.

Yes, it was true. She left me and crawled into his bed. She hardened her heart against me, but I still loved her.

In the end, I think she loved me too.

At least, I hoped.

But it didn’t matter. I died for her.

And I’d do it again.
