Chapter Twenty-Eight #2

“Wasn’t Mikayla sitting on it?”. His head swiftly turns to me with his permanent scowl in place.

“She was on the floor,” Caine says. “I heard it crash and ran in.”

“You’re killing me, Mikayla.” Kyle runs his hand over his face. “I want to see if food helps, but if not, I’ll want to run some labs.”

“Can someone please tell me what the fuck is going on?” Caine bellows.

“I fainted,” I state flatly.

“Again?”

“She didn’t eat,” Kyle says.

I look at him with my mouth hanging open. “Why you got to throw me under the bus?”

“I’ll let Pat know I’ll be home for the rest of the day,” Caine says, pulling his phone out of his back pocket.

“Caine, you don’t have to take the day off,” I say while trying to stand up, but I get a case of the spins as soon as my butt leaves the mattress.

“Sit down!” Kyle says, seeing my distress. “I hope it’s just a blood sugar issue.”

It’s obvious at this point that I’m not going to win this. And the dizziness is now making me really worried too. Caine sends his text and places his phone back in his pocket with a glare at me.

“You should have called me!” he scolds, pointing a finger at me. “I’ll get you food,” Caine says before walking away!

“Can you get me clothes first?” I holler before he can leave the room.

“Fuck,” he says, walking back. Kyle doesn’t move as Caine grabs a shirt and some shorts for me from a set of drawers. I didn’t even realize he had unpacked and put my clothes away for me.

Conversation for another time… will be filing that away for later. Sweet man.

“I need underwear,” I remind him, watching to see where he puts those items.

When Caine moves to remove my towel, I grip it as tightly as I can and turn my gaze to his friend.

“Why the fuck are you still here?” Caine barks.

“You never minded before,” Kyle grumbles, rolling his eyes, and walking away.

“Pardon me?” I ask with obvious irritation.

“Nothing,” Caine says, as he tries to put my bra on.

“I’m capable of getting myself dressed!” I tell him, swatting him away and grabbing my bra.

“Fuck,” he whispers when I drop the towel.

“Sorry, babe. I’m not sharing if you aren’t.” I let him know with a shrug of my shoulder as I pull on my t-shirt.

“He’s being a prick. I never shared a woman with him,” Caine says.

“I feel like that’s only half the story. Don’t lie to me, and I need your help now so I can put on my shorts.”

Caine walks over and kneels down to help me pull on my bottoms. He then lifts me up and carries me out of the room.

“You really are an asshole, you know that?” Caine yells at Kyle as he places me on the sofa in the living room.

Kyle just grins a big, toothy grin in response.

“If Kyle saw a woman I slept with naked, it was after I had her,” Caine says. “That came out sounding really bad. I didn’t mean it the way it sounded,” he adds, holding up his hands in surrender.

I laugh at the look of frustration on his face. “I believe you.”

I watch from my perch while Caine makes me a sandwich, Kyle grabbing some slices before putting the meat and bread away for Caine.

Caine walks over to me with the plate in hand and sits next to me, kissing my forehead. He puts the plate on the coffee table and grabs one of the sandwiches for himself.

When Kyle sits down in the single chair, we eat in companionable silence. I am hungry and actually eat everything without issue.

Once we finish. Kyle grabs our plates and walks to the kitchen.

“Let’s give it some time, see if the food helps. Have you had fainting issues in the past?” he asks as he places the dishes in the sink.

“No, but I’ve never been this sick before,” I explain. Kyle just looks at me, his expression unreadable. “What?”

“I’m just thinking,” he says. “Headaches? Migraines? Ear pain?”

“No.” I shake my head.

“Have you had anything to drink since you got back from the clinic?”

“She went straight to bed,” Caine says.

Kyle opens the fridge and grabs a bottle of water and tosses it to Caine, who catches it one-handed. I’m kind of awe-struck by the whole thing and don’t immediately react when Caine hands me the water.

He smirks.

“I think we know what’s wrong,” Kyle says.

Over the next hour, I drink two bottles of water. By the time Kyle leaves, I’m finally able to get up and walk a bit.

Caine, the sweet man, gets my wet clothes out of the shower, and does a load of laundry for me.

“I’m gonna see how tomorrow goes. If you’re able to get up and everything, I’ll go back to work.”

While he transfers the wet clothes to the dryer, I sit on the sofa and read a book. I lift my head when a shadow forms over me. I smile when Caine lifts his arms and helps me stand. With my hand in his, we walk to the back porch.

My mouth drops as I look around. Colors of orange and red light up the sky and my eyes widen at the beauty before me.

I haven’t been out here at all, and for the first time I see the vast land his ranch sits on.

Grassy hills surround the property. I can even see the stream we walked to the other day.

Caine walks me to a porch swing and sits beside me. I curl into him, my legs beneath me and enjoy the view.
