Epilogue

Ihaul myself up the last flight of stairs.

Every muscle aches; my shoulders burn, and my knees tremble after fourteen hours running the sanctuary and slogging through paperwork.

I want only sleep—maybe a hot shower if I can manage it.

But then I see a soft glow under our bedroom door, at odds with exhaustion's heavy blur. I’m sure I turned everything off this morning.

My hand pauses on the knob, heart thudding.

Curiosity wins over exhaustion. I open the door to find everything changed.

Candles. Dozens of them, their steady flames casting warmth throughout our bedroom, transform every hard angle into softened gold.

For a disoriented second, awe sweeps through me, blurring reality, and a tightness lodges in my chest as if I might be dreaming.

But the scents, the hush, the familiar shadows make it undeniable—this is our space, newly sacred through glow and shadow.

As my eyes adjust, I notice details that take my breath away.

Photographs—vintage prints in sepia and black-and-white—cover almost every surface.

Us. Five years of memories, some I didn’t even know were captured.

There I am laughing in the garden, dirt on my cheek.

Silas is in profile against the watchtower window, his face open in a way few see.

Our hands together over restoration plans.

I am asleep against his chest. Every kind of moment, big and small, is preserved.

“Five years today,” he whispers against my neck, his voice warm and close.

Even though I’m exhausted, shivers run down my spine.

His arms wrap around my waist from behind, steady and sure, his body heat soaking through my blouse and making my skin tingle.

There’s no hesitation in his touch now, not like in the early days when every move asked for permission.

“I completely forgot,” I confess, guilt flaring in my chest. My shoulders tense under the weight of my oversight. “The preservation board meeting, and then the new family from Wisconsin—”

“I know,” he murmurs, lips finding the sensitive spot below my ear, his breath hot against my skin. Goosebumps chase away any lingering cold, and a flush of gratitude and longing washes over me. “I watched you wear yourself out all day.”

Of course he did. Five years on, he still watches me.

Now, it’s out of love, not just duty. With purpose, his hands find the buttons of my blouse, practiced ease guiding each movement.

One by one, they come undone, and the fabric opens slowly.

Cool air brushes my skin, and anticipation grows with every inch revealed.

My breath quickens, though I’m tired. I feel the strength in his fingers, the roughness of his calluses, the warmth of his knuckles as he moves down.

“You should have reminded me,” I whisper, breath stuttering, the admission woven through with shame and barely hidden longing shaped by his touch.

His fingers stop at the last button, and I feel him smile against my neck. "And miss the chance to surprise you? Never." His voice is playful now, confident from knowing me well, from learning what makes me gasp and what words make me melt.

My blouse slips from my shoulders. He catches it and sets it aside.

His palms return to my skin, tracing lines that awaken nerves long dormant after the day.

His touch is firm yet gentle, fingers spread wide, thumbs circling my ribs, making my stomach tighten.

When his fingers reach my bra clasp, I turn toward him, wanting his mouth on mine, needing that connection.

His grip tightens at my waist, stopping me with gentle authority.

"Not yet," he commands, his voice dropping to that register that turns my bones to water, making heat pool low in my belly.

The Silas I knew five years ago would never have given such a directive.

This Silas, my husband, my partner, my guardian still, knows I crave this surrender after days spent making endless decisions.

I relax back against his chest, offering my submission freely, feeling the solid wall of him supporting me, the steady rhythm of his heartbeat against my shoulder blades.

His reward is immediate: the warm press of lips against my shoulder blade, the slight edge of teeth that promises more to come, sending electricity sparking across my skin.

My bra joins my blouse somewhere in the darkness beyond the candles’ glow.

“Do you know what I thought when I watched you today?” he asks.

His hands slide around to cup my breasts with possessive certainty.

His palms are warm, slightly rough. The contrast on my sensitive skin makes me arch into his touch.

His thumbs brush across my nipples with deliberate pressure, circling slowly.

I have to lock my knees to stay standing, my thighs trembling.

"I thought about how remarkable it is, this woman who commands a room full of officials without blinking, who makes decisions affecting dozens of lives, who carries the weight of this sanctuary on her shoulders, and how only I get to see her like this. "

His hand drifts lower, fingers trailing down my stomach with agonizing slowness.

He traces the curve of my waist, the jut of my hip bone.

He finds the zipper of my skirt with unerring accuracy.

The metallic rasp is loud in the quiet room.

It falls to pool around my ankles. Fabric whispers against my legs.

I’m left in just underwear, suddenly far too substantial a barrier.

I can feel the heat radiating from his fully clothed body.

The texture of his shirt and pants against my bare back creates friction, making me hyper aware of every point of contact.

"Like what?" I manage, my voice barely above a whisper. His fingers hook into the waistband of the last fabric between us. The simple cotton feels electric where his knuckles graze my hip bones. I’m acutely aware of how damp the material has become, evidence of my body’s eager response.

“Surrendered,” he murmurs against my hair, his breath warm and intimate.

His lips brush my temple, then trail down to my ear.

“Trusting.” A kiss to the sensitive spot behind my ear that makes my knees weaken.

“Mine.” The word rumbles through his chest into my back, a claim and a promise wrapped together.

He slides the fabric down with reverent slowness, his palms skimming along my thighs.

The sensation of being gradually revealed, cool air kissing newly exposed skin, his hands mapping territory claimed countless times—yet explored with wonder—sends heat flooding through me.

I step out of the garment, now completely bare in the candlelight.

He remains fully clothed behind me. The imbalance is deliberate, I know—it’s part of his careful orchestration of this anniversary gift.

Vulnerability and power intertwine. My nakedness makes me feel both exposed and worshipped.

His hands slide down my sides with aching tenderness.

He reads my body like blueprints he’s memorized over years of careful study.

Every dip and curve, every place that makes me gasp or sigh, he knows.

His fingers trace my spine, counting vertebrae.

Then his hands spread across my lower back, thumbs pressing into muscles just enough to make me melt into his touch.

"To the bed," he directs. His palm, warm and commanding, presses against my lower back to guide me forward with gentle insistence.

Moving, my legs feel unsteady; I'm hyper-aware of my nakedness and his gaze that tracks every sway of my hips.

The sheets, cool and silken against my heated skin, make me shiver as I lie down.

I turn to face him—he stands at the bedside, still fully dressed, his eyes drinking in every inch of me with unabashed hunger that makes my breath catch.

The way he looks at me—like I’m something both precious and profane—never fails to ignite something primal in me.

His gaze travels slowly: first from my flushed face, then down my throat; he lingers on my breasts, their nipples peaked, before drifting along my stomach and stopping where my thighs press together in modesty.

I watch his jaw tighten. I see his hands flex at his sides, as though restraining himself from simply pouncing.

His clothes disappear with efficient movements that speak of barely leashed desire, buttons surrendering quickly, fabric discarded without ceremony.

Each revealed inch of him makes my mouth go dry.

The lean muscle beneath pale skin, scattered with scars that tell the story of a life spent in protection.

The defined lines of his abdomen that I’ve traced with tongue and fingers more times than I can count.

The evidence of his arousal, thick and ready, makes heat pool between my thighs, and my inner muscles clench in anticipation.

When he finally joins me on the bed, the mattress dipping under his weight, his body covers mine with delicious pressure.

Skin against skin, the heat of him seeping into me, the solid weight of muscle and bone pressing me into the silk sheets.

His mouth finds mine in a kiss that starts gentle, a soft brush of lips, a tender exploration, but quickly ignites into something fiercer, more demanding.

His tongue sweeps into my mouth, claiming, tasting, and I open for him eagerly, my hands sliding up his back to feel the flex of muscle beneath warm skin.

“Happy anniversary,” I whisper against his lips when we break for air, both of us breathing hard. His answering smile holds a heat that melts the last of my exhaustion, replacing it with liquid desire that thrums through my veins.
