Chapter 4
Cassie
Present day.
B ecca simply stares at me. Her eyebrows furrow together. At my deliberate lack of detail or the out-and-out anticlimax of my story, I’m not sure which.
“And…?” she eventually asks, tilting her chin in my direction. “You didn’t get pregnant from a couple of sneaky glances, Cassie. You’re going to have to give me a whole lot more to work with here. I assume at some point in this story, you actually speak to him?”
Leaning against the edge of the sink, I exhale slowly, rubbing the tip of my sneaker back and forth over the broken grout between the floor tiles. She’s right. There is more to the story. So much more.
I just don’t know how I’m going to explain it all to her without it coming across as some sorry tale. My pride, yeah, she’s a thing of the past.
Becca just blinks at me.
“Fine, I’ll explain it to you. But you have to promise not to judge me.”
“I cross my heart.” She swipes her finger over her left boob in a criss-cross pattern. “Who came onto whom? Did you make the first move? Or did Quinn give you the green light?”
I stand tall despite feeling smaller than I ever have before. “I was attracted to him. Yes. He made me feel things I haven’t felt in a really long time. I missed being the object of a man’s interest, so I acted on those feelings.”
Shifting her feet, she puts her hands on her hips. “What does that even mean?”
“It means exactly what it sounds like. I flirted with him. It felt nice to flirt with a cute guy again, and have him flirt back. Quinn doesn’t look at me like everyone else looks at me. He doesn’t look at me like he has to be careful with me, like I’m breakable.”
Becca hangs off my every word. “How does he look at you?”
“He looks at me like a man who knows exactly what he wants to do with me.”
“Oh, wow, okay.” Becca makes a sound, like a tiny whimper. “Get to the good part. Hurry up. I’m dying here. How did you end up together? And more importantly, how did you end up pregnant with his baby?”
“Yeah, about that…”
