Chapter Five — Alex

Somewhat surprisingly, I win. It’s surprising because, according to Wikipedia, Callum is a chess prodigy.

And perhaps even more surprisingly, Callum doesn’t even seem upset. He just shakes my hand and smiles. “Seems like I may have met my match,” he says, smirking.

I thank him, but something doesn’t seem quite right. I wait for him to do something, make a move — anything, really — but he doesn’t. He just escorts me out, his hand resting on my lower back for a second too long.

The second he lets me go, though, I kind of wish he’d put his hand back. But he doesn’t. He’s a perfect gentleman.

Which somehow unsettles me even more.
