Chapter Two — Alex

What have I done?

As good as it felt in the moment to stick it to Callum, I’m suddenly regretting everything. Every moment I spend in the living room, naked, waiting for him, I regret my decision more and more.

I start contemplating putting my sundress on, but I know that’ll just make whatever’s about to happen ten times worse. I check the clock above the television. It’s only been three minutes, but it feels like three hundred.

What is he planning? What is he thinking? Should I apologize? Act defiant? Double down? I’m confused. I’m turned on. Angry. Upset. Emotional. Proud. It’s a disaster. I don’t even know how I feel.

So I close my eyes, and I focus on my breathing. Now more than anything, I could use some mindfulness. I take some deep breaths, focusing on my body. I almost laugh, thinking to myself that this is probably not how my meditation teachers ever expected me to employ this practice.

But hey — they always said mindfulness is something you integrate into day-to-day life, right? Maybe this is exactly the right time to employ it.
