CHAPTER TWO

I glance back at the oven, and then at the pot on the stove.

I open the oven a crack and glance inside. The lasagna is not even close to being done. I glance back to the stove where I’m boiling a pot of broccoli. I spear a piece and yelp as it burns my tongue.

“Fuck!” I yelp.

“Everything okay in here?”

I turn around as he walks in. My heart thumps loudly..

As much as I want to hate him, I can’t. He looks like a Greek god, and it’s hard to hate something so beautiful. I’m still mesmerized by his green eyes. I’m hoping that I’ll get used to them as time goes on.

“One minute,” he says. His voice snaps me out of my trance.

Fuck it, I think to myself.

I turn off the boiling pot of water and dump the broccoli into a colander. I pull the lasagna out of the oven and place the pan on the kitchen table. I glance back at the clock—I’m running out of time.

I grab plates and two forks and throw them on the table.

“Done,” I say, crossing my arms.

He raises his eyebrows. “You sure?” he asks.

I fake a smile. “Absolutely. You’re going to love it.” I try not to give away how nervous I’m feeling.

He smiles, and I notice some expression I can’t quite place across his face. Is he hoping I’ll fail? I ask myself. But he doesn’t say anything.

“Let’s eat,” he says finally.
