CHAPTER THREE
I spot a loose brick a few feet from me. It’s not much, but it’s something.
I pick it up, my heart pounding. What am I doing? I think to myself. This is insane.
But I can’t just stand here and watch Hunter get shot.
I take aim and throw the brick as hard as I can at the man with the gun.
It hits him in the shoulder and he yelps, dropping the weapon.
I have to admit, I’m slightly impressed with myself.
Good shot, Lorelai, I think to myself.
Everyone spins around, looking for the source.
“What the fuck?” John shouts.
Hunter uses the distraction to shove Luke toward the car. “Run!” he shouts.
Luke stumbles toward the car while chaos erupts.
The man I hit recovers and lunges for his gun. I don’t think—I just run.
I tackle him before he can reach it, and we both go down. Hard. He’s much bigger than me, and he immediately flips me over, pinning me down.
“You little bitch,” he snarls.
All of a sudden, he’s yanked off me.
Hunter has him by the collar and slams a fist into his face. The man goes down.
“Lorelai, what the fuck are you doing here?” Hunter shouts.
“Saving your ass,” I gasp.
John is getting closer to us now, and I watch as the other guard reaches for a weapon.
Then everything goes black.
