Chapter 17
Marcus drove straight from Lena’s apartment to the safe location where Amara was staying.
His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly the entire way.
The conversation with Lena replayed in his mind — her calm admission, the unwavering conviction in her voice, the terrifying certainty that she believed everything she had done was justified.
When he arrived, Amara opened the door before he could knock. She took one look at his face and knew something significant had happened.
“Tell me,” she said, pulling him inside.
Marcus closed the door behind him and took her hands. He led her to the living room and sat down with her on the couch. For a moment he simply held her hands, trying to find the right words.
“I spoke with Lena,” he said finally. “She admitted it. All of it. The emails, the rumors, the accident — she’s been behind everything. She’s been planning this for years.”
Amara’s face paled. She squeezed his hands tighter but did not pull away. “She said that? Out loud?”
Marcus nodded. “She didn’t even deny it. She told me she has always loved me. That she waited for me. That she did what was necessary to make sure we could be together. She sees you as an obstacle. She believes removing you is the only way to have the life she wants.”
Amara was quiet for a long moment. When she finally spoke, her voice was steady despite the fear in her eyes.
“What do we do now?”
Marcus took a deep breath. “I’m moving you to a safer place. Somewhere Lena doesn’t know about. I’ve already made arrangements with people I trust. We’re not going to wait for her to make another move. I’m taking this seriously now. I’m protecting you.”
He paused, then looked directly into her eyes.
“And I need to tell you something I should have said a long time ago. I love you, Amara. I have for years. Even when I was married, even when I was trying to make things work with someone else, there was always a part of me that felt drawn to you. I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to complicate your life.
But after everything that’s happened, I can’t hold it back anymore. I love you.”
Amara’s eyes filled with tears. She reached up and touched his face gently.
“I love you too,” she whispered. “I’ve been falling for you for a long time. I was waiting for you to be ready.”
Marcus leaned in and kissed her then. It was their first real kiss — slow, deep, and filled with all the emotion they had been holding back. In that moment, under the shadow of danger, something powerful passed between them. A promise. A connection that felt stronger than the threat they faced.
When they finally pulled apart, Marcus rested his forehead against hers.
“I’m going to keep you safe,” he said. “No matter what it takes.”
They left the safe house that evening under cover of darkness. Marcus had arranged for a private driver and a new location — a quiet house on the outskirts of the city owned by a trusted former colleague. They traveled with minimal belongings. Amara held his hand the entire way.
When they arrived at the new house, Marcus checked every room carefully before allowing her inside. He made sure the security system was activated. He double-checked the locks. Only then did he allow himself to relax slightly.
They sat together in the living room as the night deepened. Marcus told her more about Lena — the years of quiet watching, the notebook, the careful planning. Amara listened without interruption, absorbing the full scope of the obsession they were facing.
“She really believes she’s doing this for love,” Amara said softly.
Marcus nodded. “That’s what makes her dangerous. She doesn’t see it as wrong. She sees it as necessary.”
Amara leaned against him. “Then we’ll be smarter than her. We’ll stay together. We’ll stay safe.”
Marcus wrapped his arm around her and held her close.
In the quiet of the safe house, with danger circling around them, they found a moment of peace.
They talked about the future they wanted.
They talked about the life they hoped to build once this was over.
They held each other and allowed themselves to believe that they could survive this.
Lena, meanwhile, sat alone in her apartment that night.
She had received word that Marcus had moved Amara. She knew he had confronted her. She knew the game had entered a new phase.
She opened her black leather notebook and turned to a fresh page. She wrote the date at the top and began making careful notes.
The battle was far from over.
She had waited years for Marcus.
She would not let him go so easily.
