Chapter 19
Lena had always known that the child would be her greatest strength.
In the days following Marcus’s confrontation, she moved with quiet purpose.
She contacted a family law attorney known for aggressive representation.
She gathered medical records, financial statements, and carefully documented every interaction she had ever had with Marcus since the baby’s birth.
She built her case methodically, as if preparing for the most important project of her life.
She waited until the right moment to strike.
Marcus was at the safe house with Amara when his phone rang. He saw Lena’s name on the screen and answered with a heavy heart.
“We need to talk about our son,” Lena said calmly. “I’ve spoken with an attorney. I believe it’s best for the child to have a stable, consistent home. I’m prepared to seek full custody if necessary.”
Marcus stood up slowly, his free hand clenching into a fist. “You’re using our son as a weapon now?”
“I’m doing what’s best for him,” Lena replied. “He needs stability. He needs a mother who is fully committed to his well-being. You’ve been distracted lately. Divided. That isn’t fair to him.”
Marcus’s voice remained controlled, but the anger underneath was unmistakable. “You tried to harm the woman I love. You’ve been manipulating me for years. And now you want to take my son away?”
“I want what’s best for our family,” Lena said. “If you continue to see Amara, it will create instability. It will confuse our son. I’m prepared to go to court and show exactly why I should be the primary caregiver.”
Marcus ended the call without another word. He stood in silence for a long moment, then turned to Amara.
“She’s threatening custody,” he said. “She’s using the baby to try to control me.”
Amara’s face showed both fear and resolve. “She’s trying to force you to choose.”
Marcus pulled her close. “I won’t let her use our son like this. But I also won’t let her hurt you. We need to be smart about this.”
Over the next several days, Lena escalated her efforts. She sent formal letters through her attorney. She hinted at public statements about Marcus’s “unstable personal life.” She made it clear that she was prepared to fight in court and in the court of public opinion.
Marcus met with his own legal team. He gathered evidence of Lena’s behavior. He documented every threat. He prepared for a difficult battle.
Through it all, he continued to protect Amara. He moved her to a new location. He varied their routines. He made sure she was never alone.
One evening, as they sat together in yet another safe house, Amara rested her head on his shoulder.
“I hate that she’s using your son against you,” she said softly. “It feels so cruel.”
Marcus held her close. “She believes she’s doing the right thing. That’s what makes this so difficult. She’s not acting out of hatred. She’s acting out of what she thinks is love.”
Amara looked up at him. “And what do you think is right?”
Marcus was quiet for a long moment. “I think our son deserves to have both parents in his life. But I also think he deserves to grow up in a home without fear and manipulation. I won’t let Lena use him to control me. And I won’t let her hurt you.”
They held each other tightly that night. The threat of custody battles and public scandal hung over them, but their connection remained strong.
Lena, meanwhile, sat in her apartment reviewing legal documents. She looked at a photograph of her son and smiled softly.
“Soon,” she whispered. “Soon we will be a real family.”
The battle for the child had begun.
And Lena was prepared to fight with everything she had.
