The smell of disinfectant filled the hospital corridor.
"Are you Chen Yuxuan's family?"
The doctor held the report, his voice heavy.
"The damage is too extensive. We have to remove everything. He'll need a permanent colostomy."
I trembled, my fingers shaking.
I could barely stand.
All of it. Removed. Nothing left.
I had been afraid modern medicine might leave him with something.
The doctor softened his tone.
"Try to stay calm. It's already a miracle he's alive."
I nodded and signed the consent form.
The red light above the operating room turned on.
When it went out, my husband would no longer have a rectum.
