Chapter seven
Professor Jonas
I had been trying to reach Gianna nonstop for the past four hours.
I knew she had made it to New Orleans by now.
Like damn! What the fuck was she doing all this time?
I knew her grandmother was in the hospital, but surely, she could take a couple of minutes to respond to a phone call or text message.
She finally decided to pick up around nine that night.
“Hello,” she asked sounding tired, agitated and a bit worn out.
“Hey, why haven’t you been answering my calls? I’ve been calling you for hours!”
“Yea, I know.”
“So, why haven’t you been answering?” I repeated. “Do you know how worried I’ve been?”
Shit, if she thought she was agitated, she should imagine how I felt after calling her all afternoon and evening!
It wasn’t like me to blow up bitches’ phones the way I had been doing hers.
But considering what she was going through, I had been trying to check on her fucking ass.
Only she hadn’t answered me not one damn time until now.
The whole afternoon went by without a single text message or anything.
I hoped she had a good excuse for keeping my ass dangling like that.
“My grandmother died earlier today, so forgive me if you aren’t number one on my list of top priorities right now!” she responded in a hostile tone.
“Aw shit! I didn’t know,” I said feeling like an insensitive jerk.
“Well, you might have known had you asked how my grandmother was doing when I picked up instead of jumping on my damn neck!”
“I’m sorry. It’s just that I was worried about you,” I said. “I mean, you left school since earlier and I hadn’t been able to get in touch with you.”
“I guess. Look, now isn’t a good time for me to talk.”
“Why not? What are you doing?”
“I’m at my grandmother’s house, and without her here, it just feels strange.”
“Are you there by yourself?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Why what?” she asked.
“Why are you there by yourself? Where’s the rest of your family?” I asked.
“They went home.”
“Why didn’t they stay with you? You shouldn’t be alone,” I said.
“My family has been here all evening. They went home about half an hour ago,” she said.
“Well, why didn’t you go home with them?”
“Because this is my house too. It’s where my grandmother raised me, and I feel closer to her here,” she explained. I heard her sniffling, so I assumed she was crying.
“When are you coming back to school?”
“I don’t know. After the funeral?”
“So, what are you gonna do about all of your assignments?”
“Really? Are you really asking me about assignments after I told you that my grandmother passed away?”
“Well, yea. School is almost out for summer break, so I don’t want you to fall behind,” I explained.
“I wasn’t even thinking about school, but since you’re worried about my assignments so badly, I’ll have them to you as soon as possible, okay!” she responded angrily.
“Look Gianna, I apologize if I sound insensitive to what you’re going through…”
“IF!! IF you sound insensitive!”
“Well, yea because that isn’t my intent. It’s just that you have two assignments due by Friday. And about six more before your final exam. I’m just trying to make sure you pass this class,” I said.
“Do you think you’re the only professor who assigned work for me to do? But you are the only one bothering me about them! Don’t worry PROFESSOR, I’ll have the assignments sent to you as soon as I can get them done,” she responded sarcastically.
“I miss you,” I said in an effort to lighten the mood a bit.
I realized how insensitive I sounded by asking for those assignments.
I shouldn’t have done that. So far, she hasn’t responded to what I said.
“I miss you a lot actually. I mean, we didn’t get to see each other last weekend, so I was really looking forward to spending some quality time with you this week.
” I hoped she would tell me the same, but she didn’t.
“I’ll talk to you later,” she said.
“Gian…”
I looked at my phone in my hand after I heard the beep and wondered why the hell she had hung up on me! What kind of shit was that? I called to check on her ass and she didn’t even have the decency to thank me for that!
“Jonas! What are you still doing in here?” my wife Cheryl asked as she walked into my home office.
“Didn’t I tell you to stop sneaking up on me like that? I asked you to knock before you enter my office!” I fussed.
“I thought you would have been ready for bed by now,” she said.
“I didn’t know I had a curfew,” I responded sarcastically. “I have papers to grade, and I told you that earlier when I came in here,” I said not even bothering to turn and look in her direction.
“Yea, but that was four hours ago! You mean to tell me you’re still sitting in here grading papers!”
I turned my office chair around and looked at my wife.
She and I hadn’t been seeing eye to eye on a lot of things lately.
I was sure it had a lot to do with the fact that I had been sleeping around for the past couple of years.
Maybe if I stopped cheating, things between us would get back on track, but I couldn’t help it.
The students who came into my classroom seemed to get finer and finer with each semester.
As much as I tried to remember my vows, I couldn’t do it.
If those perky breasts, thick thighs and sexy asses weren’t in my face five days a week, my marriage would probably have a chance.
Not that I believed this affair with Gianna would be the last time that I would step out on my wife.
Gianna was awesome and she had me all in. If she wanted me, I was ready to take our relationship to the next level. Because we were at the same university, she would either have to transfer to another university, or I would have to get a job at another campus.
Since I had been employed by this university for seven years, it would probably be better if Gianna transferred.
I mean, she only had one semester left before she graduated anyway.
That was something we needed to discuss as soon as possible because I didn’t think my marriage to Cheryl was going to survive another year.
“YES Cheryl! I do teach multiple classes a day, so if one class has an assignment, the other classes will have the same assignment. I can’t snap my fingers and have the papers graded! Not only that, but final exams are approaching so I’ve been working on that as well.”
“Oh okay, that’s understandable. But who were you on the phone with just now?”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“I heard you talking to someone before I walked in here.”
“So, you’re spying on me now?”
“I wasn’t spying on you. Not that I wouldn’t be justified if I was, but I don’t have time for that.”
“Like the insecure wife you are!”
“I wouldn’t have a reason to be insecure if you wouldn’t have made me that way!”
“I made you insecure! Really Cheryl? So, it’s my fault you’re insecure?!” I asked as I chuckled.
“Are you seriously gonna sit there and tell me your cheating ass ways aren’t a reason I should be insecure? Is that what you’re saying?”
“I know what I did in the past, but I’ve apologized and you said you wanted to work on our marriage for the baby. If you aren’t going to forgive me for my past, why are we staying together?” I asked.
“I ask myself that all the time,” she said. “I’m trying to trust you, but the vibes you’re giving is telling me that you found another lil heffa to screw with. So, tell me was that her on the phone just now?”
“I was talking to myself!” I responded with a salty attitude.
“What? That doesn’t make any sense because I know I heard you having a whole conversation with somebody,” she insisted.
“That’s what you say! It makes perfect sense to me since I’ve been sitting in here by myself for hours,” I replied, hoping she would buy into my lies.
“Whatever! I’m going to bed.”
“Good night.”
“You know, for someone who said you were happy about the baby, you sure aren’t acting like it.”
“I am happy Cheryl. I just wish you would quit nagging me all the fucking time!” I stressed.
“And I wish things could go back to how they used to be! You remember that? When you used to love me and want to be with me! I miss those days!” she said sadly with tears in her eyes.
With that, she turned around and walked out of my office.
A couple of minutes later, I heard the door to our bedroom slam shut.
All I could do was shake my head. I knew I wasn’t being fair to my wife with my infidelities, but I wasn’t happy in my marriage anymore.
I should have left her a couple of years ago when I first thought of having an affair.
Now that she was carrying my kid, I found myself struggling with what the right thing to do was.
I had grown up without my father in my life, so I wasn’t about to have my child be brought up without me. My wife was five months pregnant and things between us had been going downhill fast. First of all, I wasn’t in love with her anymore. I knew it was sad to say, but I had fallen hard for Gianna.
Her exotic beauty made it hard not fall head over heels for her.
Well, her beauty and her pussy. I wanted to leave my wife for Gianna, but her pregnancy along with the way Gianna was acting, I wasn’t sure if that was something I should do.
Hoping that Gianna would call me back soon, I sat in my office and waited for about twenty more minutes.
Finally, realizing she was done talking for the day, I went to bed.
Thanking God that Cheryl was already asleep, I turned my back to her and shut my eyes. Hopefully, tomorrow would be a better day.
I woke up the next morning to an email from Gianna. I rushed to the bathroom to read it.
‘Professor Jonas, I am writing this email to let you know that I will be out of school until next Monday or Tuesday. I have completed the two assignments you questioned me about earlier, so I have no other assignments due until next week.’
I was hoping she wouldn’t be gone that long, but what the hell could I do about it? I quickly emailed her back.
