Chapter twenty-one

Gianna

Three months later…

“Babe, I bought you something,” Dimitri said with a mischievous look on his face.

“You bought me a present?”

“Something like that,” he said with a smile.

“What does that mean?”

“It’s on the bathroom counter,” he said with a wink.

“What kind of gift is it and why is it in the bathroom?” I asked as I slipped out of bed. I could hear him laughing as I walked towards the bathroom. When I entered, the first thing I saw was a ClearBlue box sitting on the counter. “Uhm, is this a joke?”

He slid out of bed and walked over to me. “Nope, not at all. I’ve just noticed a change in your figure and appetite lately. Not to mention the fact that you haven’t had a cycle since you got back home,” he said.

“You know how much I’ve been stressing about my situation with Jonas.

Not only that, but I’m still trying to get my records transferred here so I can start school in a couple of weeks,” I said.

“Stress affects people in different ways. It makes them eat more and that might be the reason my cycle hasn’t started yet. I already told you that!”

“Babe, what harm could it do to be sure? Just take the test. If you’re not pregnant, we can go about our business like nothing happened. However, if you are, you need to go to the doctor so they can start you on prenatal vitamins.”

“Fine!” I relented.

“You act like it would be a bad thing for you to be pregnant,” he said, sounding disappointed.

“Not a bad thing, but definitely the wrong time. If I can get my transfer, I have to start school soon and graduation is right around the corner. How am I going to do all that and be big and pregnant?” I asked from the toilet.

“We’ll figure it out.”

After I finished peeing on the stick, I wiped myself. I grabbed an extra piece of tissue and flushed the toilet. Then I put the test on the tissue on the counter and waited for the results.

“You know if you are pregnant, Avrianna is gonna be thrilled,” he said with a huge smile.

“Yea, but how is Renee gonna feel about it?”

“Who cares? I don’t tell her how to run her life, so she can’t tell me shit about mine!”

“What are we gonna do with a baby, Dimitri?” I asked as I pouted. I loved Dimitri, but I wasn’t sure if I was ready to be somebody’s mommy yet.

“We are going to love it just like we do each other,” he said as he kissed me on the lips.

I took a deep breath and turned to look at the test. Sure enough, the results were positive. I immediately started to cry because with all this drama going on, how could I bring a baby in the mix. Dimitri put his arms around me and held me tight.

“You don’t have to cry baby. I’m gonna be with you every step of the way. You won’t have to go through this alone,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting it to be positive,” I confessed.

“Bae really?” he asked as he side eyed me.

“For real! Why would I think that I was pregnant?”

He came up behind me and lifted my shirt. “Turn to the side,” he said.

I turned sideways and looked in the mirror.

How could I not have noticed this baby bump?

I mean, I had been eating more lately, but that didn’t mean anything.

But looking at my figure in the mirror made me wonder if I had been in denial all this time.

Then the wheels started to turn in my head as I did the math.

If I was already showing that meant I was either four or five months.

I couldn’t be…

“We need to make an appointment for an ultrasound right now!” I stressed as I walked into the bedroom. I sat on the bed and grabbed my phone.

“Why right now?” Dimitri asked.

“I need to know how far I am,” I said nervously.

Then came the worried look on Dimitri’s face. “You are not pregnant with his kid!”

I looked into his eyes as tears ran down my cheeks. “How do you know that? We don’t and won’t know for sure until we get an ultrasound.”

As I went to Google, I found an imaging center that did ultrasounds.

I called them and thankfully, they had a cancellation this morning.

The two of us got dressed and were ready to leave in forty minutes.

My nerves were extremely bad the whole drive there, and when we finally arrived, all I could do was pray that Jonas wasn’t the father of my baby.

Ten minutes after we arrived, we were called to the back.

As I lay on the table, I reached my hand out to Dimitri.

He kissed the back of it as the lady rolled the wand on my belly.

I couldn’t believe I had a baby growing inside me and I didn’t even know until now.

She did measurements and showed us his little arms and back.

She let us listen to the heartbeat and told us how strong it was. She said that our baby was healthy and asked if we wanted to know the sex of the baby.

“Right now, I’d just like to know how far along I am please,” I said.

“Well, according to the measurements, you are fourteen weeks along,” she said.

Dimitri pulled out his phone, and we went back fourteen weeks, and I just felt the biggest rush of relief.

As the girl continued to move the wand on my belly, she said, “Oh my God!”

“What? What is it?” I asked, growing concerned.

We were finally able to breathe now that we knew the baby was Dimitri’s. Now, she was causing me to panic thinking that something else was wrong with the baby.

“Uhm, you’re having twins,” she said.

“Who’s having twins?” I asked.

“You are. Do you see that little body right there?” she asked as she pointed to the screen. “That’s a second baby! Congratulations!”

Dimitri was smiling so big and bright that I didn’t even have to ask him if he was happy. Me, on the other hand, was in awe at the news.

“Are you sure?” Dimitri asked.

“I’m positive,” she said. “I was trying to see if I can tell what you’re having, but then I saw the second baby. They aren’t in a position for me to tell you the sexes yet, but I’m sure you’ll have another ultrasound soon enough.”

She printed pictures of the babies, marking them ‘Baby A’ and ‘Baby B’.

I could not believe this was happening. Dimitri was still holding my hand when I felt him slip something on my finger.

I looked over and saw a gorgeous chocolate diamond ring.

I knew that was what it was because I was admiring one on my phone the other day when it came up on an ad on Facebook.

I did not expect him to do this, especially not right now. “What…”

“Babe, I love you. I planned to ask you at home in a more romantic setting but once the results of the pregnancy test came back positive, I didn’t want you to have any doubts about me and my commitment to you.

I wanna marry you, and I want us to raise our babies in one home together as a family.

So, will you marry me, Gianna?” he asked.

The woman quickly wiped the gel off my belly as I sat up on the table. Looking into his beautiful eyes, I could see why my grandmother thought we would make the perfect couple.

“Yes!”

He stood up and kissed me like he had never kissed me before. Then we held each other tight for a few minutes before leaving the room. We went into that room thinking we were having one baby and got two. And we also got engaged!

I couldn’t wait to share the news with everyone! After all the shit that had happened to me, I ended up with a real one! We were on our way back to Dimitri’s house when my phone started ringing. It was a Texas number, so I was immediately on edge.

“Hello,” I answered.

“Gianna, it’s Mr. Diaz from the district attorney’s office. I have some news about your case,” he said.

“What news?”

“Well, I wanted you to hear this from me before you heard it anywhere else. Mr. Alexander has accepted a plea for all the charges. His sentencing hearing will be held in a month if you would like to come and give a victim’s impact statement,” he said.

“How much time is he getting?” I asked.

“He will be spending the rest of his life in prison, Gianna. There is no possibility of parole, so he won’t ever be a free man again.”

I breathed a sigh of relief hearing that. “Thank God!”

“So, will you be giving a victim’s impact statement.”

“I don’t think so, Mr. Diaz. As much as I appreciate everything you and your office have done to keep him locked up for good, I don’t ever want to see that man again.”

“Well, you can always write a statement and email it to my office. We will read it for you to the judge,” he offered.

“Well, if I can do that, I will get right on it.”

“Thank you, Gianna.”

“You’re welcome, Mr. Diaz. Have a nice day.”

“You too.”

We ended the call and Dimitri asked, “What was that about?”

“He took a plea. He’s gonna spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole,” I informed him.

“That’s great!” he said as he kissed the back of my hand. “You see, I told you everything would work out.”

“You did say that. The sentencing hearing is next month, so Mr. Diaz wanted me to go and give a victim’s impact statement, but I declined.”

“Why?”

“Because we just found out the best news ever and I don’t want to dwell on the past. He doesn’t need to know about anything going on in our lives right now. I’m completely done with his ass, and I wanna keep it that way,” I said.

“Okay, cool.”

“Mr. Diaz said I can write a statement and send it to his email. They will read it in court for me.”

“Even better.”

“I love you, Dimitri. Thank you for always being here for me,” I said.

“There’s no place else I’d rather be,” he said with a wink.

Thank you, Maw Maw!
