14. Fourteen - Ahmad
Fourteen - Ahmad
A hmir was doing great. He was a happy baby. No one would even be able to guess he was a preemie. After being in the hospital for a little over a month, and home with us for three months, Ahmir was right on trend with his development.
Jameela wanted to try and go back to work, so I took care of hiring a nanny. It only took Jameela one week of missing Ahmir to decide that she only wanted to go back to work part time.
From what I knew of her relationship with Kennedy, she was more than amenable to her spending less time at the office. And by the conversations I overheard, Kennedy didn’t understand why she wanted to come back to work at all. Especially as she put it… with a rich, fine ass doctor for a baby daddy.
I pretended that I didn’t hear that conversation.
I didn’t just want to be her baby daddy.
Jameela was perfect in every way possible, and I was starting to wonder if the universe was giving me a special gift that was her… and my beautiful baby boy.
In just a short time, I was in deep like with Jameela, and if I sat quietly, really taking stock of my feelings, I’m sure there was love there. I just wasn’t sure if it was a subject that should be broached so early in an already complicated situation.
After she basically ordered me to give her some dick, I spent most nights in her bed, making sweet love to her. The other nights, I spent sleeping on the floor of our son’s nursery, simply wanting to be close to him.
I guess I was so distracted with everything going on in my mind, that I didn’t even notice Daran come into my office… until I felt a balled-up piece of paper hit my head.
“What you over there daydreaming about, Maad?” He asked.
“Life,” was the only reply I could manage.
“Yeah, well… you definitely have one hell of a life. Some real live cinema shit going on,” he chuckled. “How’s it going at home, anyway?”
“I’ve been at Jameela’s this entire time. I’ve been by my place to pack clothes… that’s it.”
“Word? So y’all a family now?”
“D, I’m not sure what we are. All I know is that I wanted to make sure her and Ahmir were good. Next thing I know, I’m diving between her legs damn near every night. I’m so damn confused.”
I really didn’t want to talk about sex with Jameela. It felt like something Daran didn’t need to know about at all. But hell, I needed some help with this shit.
“Oh… wow! I’m not sure what to say to that.” He paused for a minute, looking thoughtful. “You’re falling in love with her?” He asked. Then answering his own question, his eyes widened before he said, “You are, aren’t you?!”
I hung my head, because I was. I don’t even know when it happened.
We barely had time to get to know one another, but I did know, the way she took care of Ahmir, the way her eyes lit up when I made love to her…
as if she’d never been treated so precious before…
were all reasons to cause me to fall in love with the beautiful woman that was Jameela.
“She’s perfect, D. I don’t know how a woman like her is still single at forty. Because I’ve only spent a few months with her, and I already don’t want to let her go.”
“Damn, brotha. That’s some serious stuff right there. But you deserve to be happy. You waited a long time to find happiness and it just so happens that it found you first.”
“I don’t know if she feels the same way. And I don’t want to bring it up. She just had a baby. I can’t lay something like this on her so soon postpartum.”
“I hear you, Maad. But it sounds like your heart has already decided for you. So, handle it whichever way you see fit.”
“Thanks, man. Now, I have to get ready for my nosy ass sister’s visit.”
“Word? My girl, coming into town?” Daran asked, jokingly.
“Man, I will fuck you up over Corin.”
Daran threw his hands up.
“You know I’m playing. I would never. I just like messing with you. While your sister is beautiful, she’s way too young for my ass. I don’t want those type of headaches in my life.”
I couldn’t help but laugh, because Corin was definitely a damn headache at times.
“Yeah, I know. I think she’s out in San Diego being somebody’s side chick and I don’t like it. I may have to break one of these knucklehead’s jaw.”
“Yeah? Why do you say that?”
“She’s been really secretive about somebody , and with all of the people she’s around and the circles she traverses, I can see a married dude with money trying to get at her. I can only hope she wouldn’t fall for it, but I’m starting to get suspicious.”
“Well, you know I got your back. I’m right there with you if jaws need to be broken. We can worry about our medical licenses later.”
I laughed.
“No doubt. But let me get back to these patients. I have to pick Corin up from the airport and get home to MiMi and the baby.”
“You still calling her MiMi? Yeah… you’re in love.”
Before I could even reply, Daran left out of my office, closing the door behind him.
I wasn’t sure what I was going to do about this revelation that I finally allowed myself to speak out loud.
But first, I needed to wrap up the day and get my sister from the airport.
