Epilogue - Emma
One Year Later
I check my watch for the third time in five minutes. The club meeting is running long, which isn't unusual, but today my nerves can't handle the wait. I pace across the main room of the clubhouse, one hand resting absently on my still-flat stomach.
"They'll be out soon," Evelyn assures me from where she sits on the couch, a knowing smile on her face. "Stop pacing before you wear a hole in the floor."
"I can't help it." I drop into the armchair across from her. "What if they freak out? What if Rex isn't ready? What if my father has a heart attack?"
"First, Rex adores you and will be thrilled." Evelyn counts off on her fingers. "Second, your father is only forty-four and in excellent health. And third, they both survived the Vultures war, I think they can handle becoming a father and grandfather."
I groan, dropping my head into my hands. "Easy for you to say. You're not the one about to tell an MC president that his daughter got knocked up by one of his soldiers."
Evelyn laughs softly. "No, but I am the one who told that MC president I was pregnant months ago. Trust me, he'll handle it better than you think."
I glance at her small baby bump, just beginning to show beneath her flowing top. My father's reaction to Evelyn's pregnancy had surprised everyone. He'd actually cried before sweeping her into a gentle hug. It was the most emotion I'd ever seen him display publicly.
My relationship with my father has transformed over the past year.
After the war ended, I returned to college to finish my degree in criminal forensics, but I spent every break and long weekend in Pine Haven.
Gradually, the walls between us lowered.
We started having real conversations—about his life, my mother, his regrets, my dreams. We'll never have a normal father-daughter relationship, but what we've built is honest, and in many ways, stronger for having been broken and rebuilt.
And Rex... God, Rex has been my rock through everything. Driving four hours to surprise me at college when club business allowed. Supporting my FBI aspirations even though it puts me at odds with the MC world. Loving me fiercely, protectively, but never trying to cage me.
The sound of the chapel doors opening pulls me from my thoughts. The brothers file out one by one. Ghost with his perpetual scowl, Blade looking serious as always, Ace and Viper arguing about something. Then Rex appears, followed by my father.
My heart jumps into my throat as Rex's eyes find me across the room. His face brightens instantly, the way it always does when he sees me. After a year together, that look still makes my stomach flutter.
"Hey, beautiful," he says, crossing to kiss me. "Didn't know you were waiting out here."
"I wanted to surprise you," I tell him, rising to meet his embrace. "Both of you, actually. I need to talk to you and my father."
Rex's expression shifts to concern. "Everything okay?"
"Yes," I assure him quickly. "Just... important."
My father approaches, giving Evelyn a quick kiss before turning to me. "What's this about, Emma? You look nervous."
"Can we sit?" I gesture to the couches. "Privately?"
The brothers take the hint, filtering out to the compound yard or the bar area. Soon it's just the four of us—me, Rex, my father, and Evelyn, who knows what's coming but stays for moral support.
I sit beside Rex on the couch, taking his hand in mine. My father settles across from us, his expression watchful.
"So," I begin, my mouth suddenly dry. "I've made some decisions about my future."
"The FBI?" my father asks, his voice neutral.
We've had this conversation before. He respects my career choice but worries about the obvious conflicts it creates.
"That's still the plan," I confirm. "But I'm taking a gap year before applying to the academy."
Rex squeezes my hand. "I thought you were set on starting right after graduation."
"I was," I say, drawing a deep breath. "But circumstances have changed."
My father's eyes narrow slightly. He's always been quick to read between the lines. "What circumstances?"
This is it. The moment of truth. I look from Rex to my father and back again.
"I'm pregnant," I say, the words rushing out. "Ten weeks along."
The silence that follows feels eternal. Rex's hand goes slack in mine, his eyes widening in shock. My father's expression freezes completely, unreadable.
"Pregnant?" Rex finally repeats, as if testing the word. "We're... having a baby?"
I nod, studying his face anxiously for his reaction. "I found out last week. I wanted to be sure before I told you."
His face breaks into the most beautiful smile I've ever seen, joy radiating from him like sunlight. "A baby," he whispers, his free hand moving to hover over my stomach. "Our baby."
Relief washes through me at his reaction. "You're happy?"
"Happy?" He laughs, the sound bright with wonder. "Emma, I'm... there aren't words. This is..." He pulls me into his arms, holding me like I'm something precious. "I love you so much."
Over his shoulder, I see my father still frozen in place, Evelyn watching him. When Rex releases me, I turn to face my father directly.
"Dad?" I say. "Are you okay?"
He blinks, coming back to himself. "I'm going to be a grandfather," he says slowly, testing the concept. "Jesus Christ."
"I know it's a shock," I begin.
"No, it's..." He runs a hand over his face, then looks at me with an expression I can't quite interpret. "It's a miracle. After everything, after all the mistakes I made, all the years we lost..." He clears his throat, emotion making his voice rough. "I never thought I'd get to see this day."
"So, you're not angry?" I ask, still uncertain.
He laughs—a real laugh, warm and genuine. "Angry? Emma, how could I be angry about something that completes the circle? That heals what was broken?"
He rises from his seat and comes to kneel in front of me, taking my hands in his. It's such an uncharacteristic gesture from the fearsome Reaper Kane that I'm momentarily speechless.
"I wasn't there for you the way I should have been," he says, his gray eyes holding mine. "But I swear to you, I will be there for my grandchild. If you'll let me."
Tears spring to my eyes. "Of course I will."
He turns to Rex, his expression changing to something more serious. "And you? Are you ready for this responsibility?"
Rex straightens, meeting my father's gaze without flinching. "I've been ready to give my life for Emma since the day I met her. That goes double for our child."
My father nods, satisfied with the answer. "Then I guess congratulations are in order." He stands, pulling Rex into a back-slapping hug before embracing me more gently. "Both of you."
Evelyn joins us, her own eyes shining with happy tears. "I told you they'd handle it well."
My father wraps an arm around her, his hand resting on her small bump.
"Now our kids will grow up together," he says, wonder in his voice. "Cousins, practically."
"A ready-made MC family," Rex jokes, pulling me against his side.
"Not MC," I correct him automatically. "At least, not necessarily. Our child will make their own choices."
"Of course," Rex agrees quickly. "Just like their mother."
My father snorts. "God help us if this kid inherits the Kane stubbornness and the Torres recklessness."
"Hey!" Rex and I protest in unison, then laugh.
Over the next hour, the clubhouse fills with brothers and their families, all coming to offer congratulations.
Someone breaks out champagne (and sparkling cider for me and Evelyn), and the celebration takes on a life of its own.
Maya starts making lists of baby gear we'll need.
Ghost, of all people, offers to build a crib.
My father keeps looking between me and Evelyn with an expression of stunned happiness, like he can't believe his good fortune.
In the midst of the chaos, Rex pulls me aside into a quiet corner.
"Are you really okay with this?" he asks softly. "The baby, the timing... all of it? I know this changes your plans."
I place my hand over his heart, feeling its steady beat beneath my palm. "Plans change. Dreams evolve. But some things stay constant." I smile up at him. "Like how I feel about you."
"And the FBI?" he asks, his concern evident. "Your career?"
"It's still my goal," I assure him. "Just delayed a bit. And maybe that's not a bad thing. A year with our baby, figuring out how to balance this new life... it might make me a better agent in the long run."
He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear, his touch gentle. "You're going to be an amazing mother. Fierce, protective, brilliant."
"And you'll be an incredible father," I tell him, meaning it completely. "Patient, strong, kind."
His hand moves to rest on my stomach.
"I never thought I'd have this," he admits, his voice low with emotion. "A family of my own. Someone to protect, to live for beyond myself and the club."
"Are you scared?" I ask, because I am. Terrified and exhilarated in equal measure.
"Fucking terrified," he confirms with a small laugh. "But the good kind of terrified. Like before a big jump, when you know the risk is worth the reward."
"The death-defying stuntman strikes again," I tease.
"Only now I have more reason than ever to survive the stunts." He kisses me softly. "I love you, Emma Kane. You and our baby are everything to me."
"I love you too, Rex Torres." I rest my head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat. "Even if you are an outlaw." I add like I always do.
"Today and forever”
Across the room, my father watches us, his arm around Evelyn. There's a peace in his expression I've never seen before—like a man who's finally found his way home after a lifetime of wandering. He raises his glass in a silent toast when he catches my eye.
One year ago, I was dragged back to Pine Haven against my will, forced to confront the father I'd spent years resenting and the world I'd tried so hard to escape. I expected to find nothing but pain and disappointment in this place.
Instead, I found Rex. I found reconciliation with my father. I found a kind of family I never knew existed. One forged in loyalty and sacrifice rather than blood alone.
And now, as I stand in the heart of the Outlaw Order clubhouse with my outlaw's hand covering our growing child, I realize that sometimes the path you fight the hardest to avoid is exactly the one you're meant to find.
This isn't the life I planned. It's better. It's real. It's mine.
And I wouldn't change a single thing.
