Chapter 14
As they drove further from the city, the landscape changed. Manicured lawns gave way to wild, overgrown fields. The road narrowed, winding through the woods. Chad peered out the window, his expression a mix of wonder and apprehension.
"Where exactly are we going?" he asked.
"You'll see," she replied, turning onto a nearly invisible dirt road. "We're almost there."
As they rounded a bend, the trees suddenly parted, revealing a sprawling white mansion. Windows glowed with warm light. The building seemed to shimmer slightly, as if it wasn't quite solid.
Chad's jaw dropped as he took in the sight of the mansion. "Is that...?"
Brianna nodded, pulling up to the ornate iron gates. "Welcome to the headquarters of the League of Amazing Witches."
As if sensing their presence, the gates swung open silently. They drove through, following the curved driveway up to the front of the mansion. Chad was silent, his eyes wide as he took in every detail.
Brianna parked the car and turned to face him. "Chad, before we go in, I need you to understand something. What you're about to see and learn... It's going to change everything. Are you ready for this?"
Chad met her gaze, his expression a mix of fear and determination. "Honestly? I'm terrified. But I trust you, Bri. And if this is as important as you say it is, then I'm ready to listen."
“That’s all I ask. Just keep an open mind.”
As they walked up the steps to the mansion, she could feel Chad's nervousness radiating off him. She gave his hand a reassuring squeeze before pushing open the heavy oak doors.
The grand foyer stopped Chad in his tracks.
Marble columns stretched up to a wide ceiling painted with intricate celestial scenes.
A massive crystal chandelier bathed everything in warm, golden light.
Portraits of stern-looking witches lined the walls, their eyes seeming to follow them as they moved.
"This is... incredible," Chad whispered, his eyes wide as he took it all in.
Before Brianna could respond, a familiar voice rang out. "Welcome, Professor Patterson."
Bas glided down the sweeping staircase, her silver hair gleaming and her emerald robes flowing behind her. She fixed Chad with her piercing gaze, and Brianna felt him stiffen beside her.
"I am Bas, the high priestess of the League of Amazing Witches," she said, her voice carrying an air of authority. "We're glad you agreed to come."
Chad glanced at Brianna, clearly overwhelmed. She gave him an encouraging nod.
"It's an honor to meet you," Chad said, his voice only slightly shaky. "Though I have to admit, I'm not entirely sure why I'm here."
Bas's lips curved into a small smile. "All will be revealed in due time, Professor. For now, let us go to the dining room. I believe Brianna promised you dinner."
She turned and glided away, clearly expecting them to follow. As they walked through the mansion's opulent hall, Brianna could see Chad trying to take in every detail. His eyes darted from the paintings to the floating candles, illuminating their way.
Before they entered the dining room, one witch after another introduced themselves, shaking Chad’s hand. “I’m Rayna,” said a fit auburn redhead.
“I’m Joell,” said a stern-looking, tall woman with light brown hair.
“G’day. I’m Magda,” said a classic redhead in an Australian accent.
“And I’m Crystal. Blimey, you’re cute,” said a blue-eyed blonde in a British accent.
“I’m Sahara,” said a serious-looking woman with long, sandy-brown hair.
“I’m Lioness,” said a petite blonde with a wild, shoulder-length mane and a bright smile.
“And I am Victoria. Bienvenue,” said a stunning brunette in a French accent.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Chad," they all said in unison.
Chad hesitated for a moment. "Um, hi. It's... um, nice to meet you too.
" As the other witches departed, Bas said, "I'm sure you’ll have many questions," then led them into the luxurious dining room.
"Please, take a seat." She indicated the chair to the right of the end spot where she sat. Brianna took the seat next to Chad.
As they settled in, Bas steepled her fingers and fixed Chad with her penetrating gaze. "I understand Brianna has told you about the League of Amazing Witches?"
Chad glanced at her before nodding. "Somewhat. But I still don't understand why I'm here." His voice was tinged with a mix of awe and apprehension. "I'm just an English professor. I don't have any magical abilities."
Bas smiled enigmatically. "You may not possess magical abilities in the traditional sense, Professor Patterson, but you have a unique role to play in the events to come. Your connection to Professor Emerson is of particular interest to us."
Chad's brow furrowed. "Professor Emerson? What does he have to do with all of this?"
Brianna exchanged a glance with Bas, unsure of how much to reveal. Bas nodded slightly, giving her permission to explain.
"Chad," she began gently, "Professor Emerson isn't just a renowned literary figure. He's also a powerful seer—someone who can glimpse the future. And he's foreseen something big. Something that could change the world as we know it."
Chad's eyes widened. "What? What has he seen?"
Bas held up a hand. "The details of the vision are not important right now. What is important is that Professor Emerson has chosen you as his protégé for a reason. He believes you have a crucial role to play in the events to come."
Chad shook his head, looking overwhelmed. "But I don't understand. What could I possibly do? I'm not magical, I'm not a seer. I'm just... me."
Brianna reached out and took his hand. "Chad, you're selling yourself short.
You have qualities that are rare and valuable.
You have a unique perspective," she said, squeezing his hand reassuringly.
"Your analytical mind, your ability to see patterns and connections in literature…
These skills translate to the real world in ways you might not realize. Professor Emerson saw that in you."
Chad looked skeptical. "So, what am I supposed to do? Analyze the future? Write an essay about impending doom?"
Bas chuckled, a sound that seemed to surprise him. "Not quite, Professor Patterson. Your role is more hands-on than that."
Just then, the doors to the dining room swung open, and the witches entered, carrying trays laden with steaming dishes. The aroma of herbs and spices filled the air, making Brianna’s mouth water.
As the food was laid out before them, Chad's eyes widened. "This looks amazing," he said, momentarily distracted from the weighty conversation.
Bas smiled. "Please, eat. We find that difficult conversations are often easier on full stomachs."
“We’ve also learned not to put off a meal since they often get interrupted,” said the little friendly one. Lioness, he thought, was her name. Some of the others chuckled at the inside joke.
As they began to eat, Chad visibly relaxed. Whether it was the delicious food or the calming spell Brianna suspected Bas had woven into it, she wasn't sure. But she was grateful for the respite.
"So," Chad said between bites of roasted vegetables, "you mentioned my role is 'hands-on'. What exactly does that mean?"
Bas set down her fork, her expression turning serious. "Professor Patterson, we believe that in the coming months, you will be faced with a series of choices. Choices that may seem small or insignificant at the time but will have far-reaching consequences."
Chad frowned. "What kind of choices?"
"We can't tell you specifics," Brianna interjected gently. "Partly because we don't know all the details ourselves, and partly because foreknowledge can sometimes alter the course of events in unpredictable ways."
Chad looked frustrated. "So, what am I supposed to do? Just blindly make decisions and hope for the best?"
Bas shook her head. "Not blindly, no. We're here to guide you, to help you understand the larger context of the choices you'll face. And more importantly, we're here to train you."
"Train me?" Chad echoed, his fork pausing halfway to his mouth. "Train me for what?"
Brianna exchanged a glance with Bas before answering.
"To recognize and navigate the supernatural world that exists alongside our own.
To understand the forces at play, both magical and mundane.
And to hone your natural intuition and analytical skills to make decisions that could have far-reaching consequences. "
Chad set down his fork, his expression a mix of disbelief and intrigue. "So, you're saying I need to become some kind of... supernatural detective?"
Bas smiled, a sight that softened her stern features. "In a manner of speaking, yes. Your ability to see patterns, to connect seemingly unrelated events, are skills that will be crucial in the coming months."
"But how?" Chad asked, leaning forward. "How can I possibly prepare for something when I don't even know what it is?"
Brianna reached out and placed her hand on his arm. "That's where we come in, Chad. The League has resources… books, artifacts, and knowledge passed down through generations of witches. We can teach you to see the world differently, to recognize the signs of supernatural influence."
Bas nodded in agreement. "And of course, you'll have Professor Emerson's guidance as well. His mentorship will be crucial in preparing you for what's to come."
Chad sat back in his chair, running a hand through his hair. "This is a lot to take in. I'm still not sure I understand why it has to be me. Surely there are more qualified people, more... I don't know, magical?"
Brianna shook her head. "Chad, you're underestimating yourself again.
It's not about being magical. It's about your unique perception, your ability to see influences that others miss.
And..." she hesitated, glancing at Bas before continuing, "there's something else.
Something about you that makes you particularly suited for this role. "
Chad's eyebrows raised. "What do you mean?"
Bas leaned forward, her green eyes intense. "Professor Patterson, have you ever experienced moments of intuition? Times when you just knew something without being able to explain how?"
Chad furrowed his brow, thinking. "I mean, I suppose so. Doesn't everyone have hunches sometimes?"
Brianna shook her head. "Not like this, Chad. We're talking about moments of clarity that go beyond normal intuition. Times when you've known things you shouldn't have been able to know."
Chad was quiet for a moment, his expression thoughtful.
"There was this one time," he said slowly.
"I was grading papers late one night, and I suddenly had this overwhelming feeling that I needed to call my sister.
When I did, it turned out she had just been in a car accident.
She was okay… just shaken, but I had no way of knowing that had happened. "
Bas nodded, a satisfied smile on her face. "Exactly. What you experienced was a latent form of precognition and sensitivity. It's rare in non-magical individuals, but not unheard of. And it's one of the reasons Professor Emerson chose you."
Chad sat back, looking stunned. "So, you're saying I'm psychic?"
"Not exactly,” Bas said. “It's more like a heightened intuition. A sensitivity to the unseen currents that flow through the world. With training, you could learn to hone this ability, to use it more consciously. You’ll have influence."
"And that's where we come in," Brianna added. "The League can provide you with the resources and training to develop this gift. Combined with your analytical skills and Professor Emerson's guidance, it could make you a powerful ally in the challenges to come."
Chad was quiet for a long moment, his eyes distant as he processed this new information. Brianna could almost visualize the thoughts churning in his head as he reorganized all the information he had gathered.
Finally, he looked up, his gaze moving between Bas and his friend. "Okay," he said slowly. "Let's say I believe all of this. That I have some kind of latent ability. That big, world-changing events are coming. What exactly would you expect me to do?"
Bas leaned forward, her expression intense.
"For now, Professor Patterson, we simply ask that you continue your mentorship with Professor Emerson, but be aware that his lessons go beyond mere literary analysis.
Pay attention to your intuition, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.
And most importantly, be prepared to act when the time comes. "
"Act how?" Chad pressed.
Brianna jumped in. "We can't give you specifics, Chad. But we'll be here to guide you. To help you interpret the signs and make the right choices.”
Chad nodded slowly, his brow furrowed in thought. "And what about my regular life? My job, my students?"
"For now, everything continues as normal," Bas said. "Your position at the university is important. It provides you with cover and connections we may need later. But you'll need to balance your academic duties with your new... extracurricular activities."
Chad let out a small laugh. "Extracurricular activities. That's one way to put it." He looked at Brianna, his expression softening. "And you'll be there? To help me through this?"
She nodded, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. "Every step of the way, Chad. I promise.”
