Chapter 21
Now nestled in the Tennessee mountains, Brianna and Chad stole a moment alone by the babbling brook under the moonlight.
The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of pine and snow in the air.
They sat side by side on a large fallen log.
The sound of the rushing water mingled with the distant hoot of an owl.
"It's hard to believe how much has changed," Chad mused, gazing up at the star-filled sky. "Just a few months ago, I was worried about grading papers and publishing articles. Now I'm learning to manipulate reality with words and help to save the world from interdimensional invaders."
Brianna squeezed his hand gently. "You've been thrown into the deep end, that's for sure. But you're handling it amazingly well. I'm really proud of you, Chad."
He turned to look at her, his eyes soft in the moonlight. "I couldn't have done any of this without you, Bri. You've been my anchor through all of this craziness."
She smiled, leaning her head on his shoulder. "We're in this together. Always."
They sat in comfortable silence for a few moments, listening to the soothing sounds of nature around them. But there was an undercurrent of tension, questions left unasked.
Finally, Chad spoke. "Bri, there's something I've been meaning to ask you. About the future you saw."
Brianna stiffened slightly. "Chad, you know I can't—"
“I wasn’t going to ask about anything new. I was just hoping you could elaborate on what you meant when you said we were closer… How close?”
“Are you asking if we’re not only partners in magic, but also partners in life?”
“Yeah. That sums up my question pretty well.”
She smiled. “I think you know.”
“Do I?”
She nuzzled his chin, and he kissed the end of her nose.
“I know what I hope you mean,” he said.
“And what is that?”
“You’re going to make me say it, aren’t you?”
She grinned. “Would that be so terrible?”
He stared at her, wistfully. “No, but nobody likes rejection.”
“I’m not rejecting you. Not now and not then.”
As their lips met, the world seemed to fall away.
The cool mountain air, the babbling brook, even the looming threats they faced…
All of it faded into the background as Chad and Brianna lost themselves in a passionate kiss.
Chad's arms encircled Brianna, pulling her close as she ran her fingers through his hair.
The moonlight bathed them in an ethereal glow, casting shimmering reflections on the nearby stream.
But even as Brianna melted into Chad's embrace, a part of her mind remained troubled.
The knowledge of Dr. Emerson's impending fate weighed heavily on her conscience.
She saw flashes of the future… the funeral, the grief, the uncertainty that followed.
And now, as her relationship with Chad deepened, she couldn't help but worry about how it might impact their mission.
Would their growing intimacy compromise their judgment?
Chad let out a deep breath, fog forming in the air between them. “It’s cold. We should get inside.”
Brianna kissed him again. “Or not.”
Unbeknownst to Chad and Brianna, Lioness sat cross-legged in her room back at the mansion, her eyes closed in deep concentration as she exercised her remote viewing abilities. The scent of sage and lavender hung heavy in the air.
As her consciousness drifted across the mountainside, she found herself drawn to the babbling brook where Chad and Brianna sat entwined.
The moonlight bathed them in an otherworldly glow, their breath mingling in the crisp night air as they shared a passionate kiss.
Lioness could almost feel the electricity crackling between them, the intensity of their connection palpable even from a distance.
She watched her fingers fly as she sketched Chad's fingers tangled in Brianna's hair, and Brianna's hands gripping Chad's shoulders, pulling him closer. The little artist always had her pencils and paper nearby and quickly drew exactly what she saw. Part of her was happy for her friend. Another part knew she’d have to tell Bas and show her the sketch.
It would be up to the boss to decide if a romantic relationship would compromise the mission.
She could easily say nothing. After all, she was simply asked to scan the perimeter for outside influences, like intruders.
Chad and Brianna weren’t intruders. As she wrestled with her conscience, she figured she could confront Brianna directly first. Maybe she could convince her friend to tell Bas herself.
After all, she would know how deep it went and might be able to reassure the boss, if it was just a moment of madness brought on by her brush with death.
As Lioness debated what to do, her remote viewing suddenly picked up on something else… a faint shimmer in the air not far from where Chad and Brianna sat. Her breath caught as she focused on it, realizing with a jolt that it was another anomaly beginning to form.
"Oh no," she whispered, her eyes flying open. She scrambled to her feet, grabbed her sketchpad, and raced out of her room. "Bas!" she called out, her voice echoing through the mansion's halls. "We have a problem!"
Bas emerged from her study; her emerald eyes were sharp with concern. "What is it, Lioness?"
"An anomaly." Lioness panted, thrusting her sketchpad at Bas. "It's forming near the brook, not far from where Chad and Brianna are."
Bas's eyes widened, and she grabbed Lioness’s small arm. “Tell me where, exactly.”
“Near the little bridge made from pallets.”
Before Lioness could say more, Bas transported the two of them to the right spot. Backs to the more experienced witches, Brianna and Chad stared, transfixed, at the anomaly.
Chad aimed his hands at the anomaly and said in his deep word-warrior voice, “Leave this place!”
The undulating air immediately became smooth and transparent again.
Lioness let out her breath in a whoosh. Chad and Brianna whirled around and spotted the two L.A.W. members behind them.
“Well done, Chad,” Bas said. “I’m glad I was able to see you in action. You used your word-power correctly and without hesitation. Now we just have to figure out what the Aether Pirates were doing here.”
“Could they have followed me from Washington, D.C. via Long Island?” Brianna asked.
“That is certainly a possibility,” Bas said.
The next morning, the L.A.W. mansion buzzed with activity as the witches gathered to discuss the latest developments.
Chad sat at the large oak table in the library, feeling both exhilarated and overwhelmed by the events of the past 24 hours.
Brianna sat beside him, her hand resting reassuringly on his knee under the table.
Bas had transported Dr. Emerson to the Mansion, and now she paced at the head of the table, her emerald robes swirling around her.
"Last night's incident proves that the Aether Pirates are growing bolder and more resourceful.
They've tracked us to our sanctuary, which means our defenses are not as well hidden as we thought. "
Dr. Emerson, looking more vibrant than he had in weeks thanks to Chad's healing, leaned forward. "We need to assume they'll try again. And soon."
"Last night's incident has made it clear that our enemies are growing bolder." Bas paced, her emerald robes shimmering as she moved. "The anomalies are appearing more frequently, and in locations we previously thought were secure."
Lioness spoke up, her voice tinged with concern. "Could they be tracking the Codex somehow?"
Bas nodded grimly. "It's possible. The Codex Temporis is an incredibly powerful artifact. Its temporal energy could be leaving a trace that the Aether Pirates can follow."
"So, what do we do?" Chad asked, leaning forward. "We can't just sit here waiting for them to attack again."
Dr. Emerson stroked his beard thoughtfully. "We need to go on the offensive. Take the fight to them before they can fully breach our reality."
Brianna's eyes widened. "You mean... enter the Aether ourselves?"
A hush fell over the room as the implications sank in.
Bas's expression was grave as she replied, "That may be our best option at this point. We need to seal the tears in reality from both sides."
Chad felt a chill run down his spine. "Is that even possible? I mean, what do we know about the other side of the Aether?”
Dr. Emerson leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with intensity. "We know precious little about the Aether itself, but we have theories. It's believed to be a sort of liminal space between realities. A nexus point where different dimensions intersect."
"And the Aether Pirates?" Chad prompted. "What do we know about them?"
Bas's expression darkened. "They're interdimensional marauders, drawn to sources of great power. We believe they seek to harness the energy of the Codex Temporis to break down the barriers between worlds and time, completely."
Brianna shuddered. "And if they succeed?"
"Chaos," Dr. Emerson said grimly. "The collapse of reality as we know it."
Chad took a deep breath, trying to process the enormity of what they were facing. "Okay, so how would we 'take the fight to them’, exactly?”
“That is what we’ve been wrestling with.
” Bas's emerald eyes gleamed with determination.
"We'll need to create a controlled portal into the Aether itself.
It's incredibly risky, but Dr. Emerson has figured out a way.
With Chad's Word Warrior abilities to command and manipulate any pirates we may come across, and the power of the Codex Temporis, we may be able to stabilize a gateway at the Library of Congress long enough to seal the tears from both sides. "
Brianna gripped Chad's hand tightly under the table. "It sounds incredibly dangerous."
"I'll go," Chad said without hesitation, his voice steady despite the fear churning in his gut. "My abilities seem to be the key to all of this. It has to be me."
"Not alone, you won't," Brianna said firmly. "I'm going with you.”
