Chapter 24
After the meeting dispersed, Chad, Brianna, and Dr. Emerson made their way to the professor's home and hidden study. The air was thick with anticipation as Dr. Emerson shoved a bookcase aside, revealing a concealed door.
"I've been waiting for the right moment to show you this," he said, his eyes twinkling with excitement. "The Codex Temporis is not just a book. It's a gateway to understanding the very fabric of time and space."
As they entered the secret room, Chad and Brianna gasped. The walls were lined with ancient texts and artifacts, but at the center stood a pedestal holding the Codex Temporis. It seemed to pulse with an otherworldly energy.
"Now," Dr. Emerson said, "we begin the real work." His fingers hovered over the worn leather cover. "Before we open this, we need to be absolutely clear on our intentions. The Codex is incredibly powerful, but also dangerous if misused."
Brianna nodded solemnly. "We want to create a global ward against interdimensional intrusion, one that can protect our entire timeline, now and into the future."
Chad added, "And if possible, a way to amplify my Word Warrior abilities to make it happen. I swear on the lives of my future children, I will not misuse whatever I learn." He glanced at Brianna. She was staring at him with brows raised, but didn’t comment.
Dr. Emerson took a deep breath. "Very well. Let's begin."
Over the next few days, the trio immersed themselves in studying the Codex Temporis. The ancient tome seemed to come alive under their scrutiny, its pages shifting and changing as if responding to their thoughts and intentions.
Brianna found herself lost in intricate diagrams of temporal flows and interdimensional gateways. Her ability to manipulate time grew stronger with each passing day, and she began to grasp the underlying principles that governed the fabric of reality.
Chad, meanwhile, focused on sections that detailed the power of words and intention. He discovered incantations and techniques that could amplify his Word Warrior abilities beyond anything he had imagined possible. No wonder Damien wanted this book!
Dr. Emerson acted as their guide, his vast knowledge helping to contextualize and interpret the Codex's more cryptic passages.
But even he found himself in awe of the book's depth and complexity.
As they delved deeper, the true scope of their task began to dawn on them.
Creating a global ward that could protect not just space, but time itself was a monumental undertaking.
Finally, the three of them pieced together a plan.
It was multi-faceted and would require all the power of the L.A.W.
witches and non-witches. Brianna had even offered to bring her sister into it.
Freya was a witch too, but not a time-traveling one.
Bas said that’s why she hadn’t been recruited, but Freya could build a strong spell, and they needed all the strength they could get.
At last, Bas relented, but she drew the line at allowing their grandmother to participate.
Both women were very protective of their grandmother and could be distracted, trying to shield her.
As the trio emerged from Dr. Emerson's hidden study, bleary-eyed but filled with newfound knowledge and purpose, they returned to the mansion on Long Island.
They found the L.A.W. witches abuzz with activity.
The witches had taken Bas's instructions to heart, honing their skills and preparing for the monumental task ahead.
Bas greeted them in the foyer, her emerald eyes sharp with curiosity. "Well? What have you discovered?"
Dr. Emerson spoke first, his voice filled with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. "The Codex Temporis is even more powerful than we imagined. It contains the knowledge to create a global ward, but the process is complex, to say the least."
Chad nodded, adding, "We'll need to combine my Word Warrior abilities with Brianna's time manipulation skills, all amplified by the collective power of the L.A.W. witches and ley lines. It's going to take everything we've got."
Brianna stepped forward, her face etched with determination. "The ward needs to be anchored at specific points around the globe—nexus points where several ley lines intersect. We'll need teams at each location, working in perfect synchronization."
Bas absorbed this information, her mind already racing with the logistics. "How many nexus points are we talking about?"
"Eleven," Dr. Emerson replied. "Scattered across the continents. And they must all be activated simultaneously for the ward to take hold."
A hush fell over the gathered witches as the enormity of the task sank in.
Joell was the first to point out the lack of members.
Eleven nexus points around the globe, each needing a ‘team’ of witches.
Let’s see, there are eight of us, plus Bas and two professors, so even if a team consists of only two people, we’re still short. What do we do now?”
“My sister, Freya, will be joining us,” Brianna said.
Several of the witches gasped. “With no training?” Victoria and Joell asked, simultaneously, looking at Bas.
“She’ll be paired with one of you. She’s a gifted and powerful healer, using her hands alone. She’s also skilled with plants and poultices.” Unspoken was the idea that she might be needed if things went wrong.
“It sounds like her gifts are closely related to mine,” Magda said.
“Indeed. I’d like you to befriend her, but more in a supportive role, Magda. Since she needs good fighting skills, I’m pairing her with our crack shot, Crystal.”
“What?” Crystal’s eyes widened. “Am I supposed to teach her my sharpshooting skills—which took years of practice—in a couple of days?”
“No,” Bas said. “I want you to show her how to blow things up.”
Crystal’s face brightened immediately. “Now we’re talking!”
Bas rolled her eyes. “I was joking.”
“Oh,” Crystal said, disappointed.
“Just teach her how to use a Taser and give her some self-defense techniques.”
“We’re still a few people short,” Joell reminded her.
Bas got up, strolled to the door, and opened it. In walked their Tennessee neighbor, Esmerelda.
Joell laughed. “What is she going to do? Bake us brownies with extra protein to keep our powers at maximum strength?”
Esmerelda smirked. “That’s not a bad idea. Here!” Extending her hand, facing up, a plate of brownies appeared on her palm.
The witches’ eyebrows rose in unison. “I didn’t know you were magical,” Joell said. “Fantastic! That gives us fourteen! Will that be enough?”
“It will have to be,” Dr. Emerson said. “We cannot fail.”
“The plan is to plant Chad’s words at each nexus point, and activate them all at once,” Brianna said. “My time manipulation can trigger his voice at the precise moment in each location.”
“How do you plan to ‘plant’ his voice?” Magda asked.
“A recording. We tried it earlier. He can manipulate a reaction from a voice recording.”
“So, we’re supposed to hit the ‘play’ button all at the same time?”
“Basically. It has to be precise, though, Brianna said. “It has to sound like one command.”
Bas nodded solemnly. "This plan is ambitious, but it's our best chance. We'll need to prepare thoroughly and work in perfect coordination."
"What about the Aether Pirates?" Victoria asked. "Won't they try to stop us once they realize what we're doing?"
Dr. Emerson's expression became grave. "Undoubtedly. That's why we'll need to move quickly and decisively. Each team will need to be prepared for combat as well as spell casting."
Bas spoke up, her voice filled with determination. "I've been working on some protective incantations. I can create a temporary shield around each witch as they work."
"Excellent," Dr. Emerson said. "We'll need every advantage we can get."
Bas turned to address the group. "Alright, everyone. We have a lot of work to do and not much time to do it. We'll need to synchronize our watches and devices to ensure precise timing across all locations. Sahara, can you handle the technical aspects of that?"
The tech-savvy witch nodded confidently. "Absolutely. I can set up a system to trigger all the recordings simultaneously to the split second, accounting for hourly time zone differences."
"Good," Bas said. "But we still need to be prepared in case anything goes wrong. You know how technology is. Great when it works, but…”
“Yeah, yeah,” Sahara said. “I know it doesn’t always perform perfectly. I’ll do everything I can to prevent user errors.”
“Hey!” Lioness protested.
Bas raised a quieting hand. “Okay, as long as we acknowledge that limitations could get in the way. Now, we need to determine who will go to each nexus point."
The group spent the next hour strategizing.
They pored over maps, considering not just magical aptitude but also fighting skills.
It was decided that Bas would travel from one nexus point to the next since she’d perfected long-distance travel along ley lines in seconds.
That way she could shore up anyone who needed help.
Since there were eleven places, all spots would have only one magical being.
Eight L.A.W. supernatural witches, one sister witch, and one neighbor witch were still only ten.
Dr. Emerson said he was able to defend one spot with conventional magic, as long as Bas checked in on him.
The mansion buzzed with activity as the L.A.W. team prepared for their global mission. Maps and ancient texts were spread across tables, while Sahara worked feverishly on her computers to synchronize their timing systems. The air crackled with a mixture of excitement and tension.
Chad found a quiet corner to record his incantation, infusing every word with his growing power as a Word Warrior. Brianna stood nearby, her eyes closed in concentration as she practiced manipulating the flow of time around them.
"Remember," Dr. Emerson cautioned, "the power is not just in the words themselves, but in the intention behind them. Chad, you must focus your entire being on sealing our reality against interdimensional intrusion when you record this."
Chad nodded solemnly, feeling the weight of responsibility on his shoulders. "I understand. I won't let you down."
Meanwhile, Crystal was working with Esmerelda and Brianna's sister, Freya, teaching them basic self-defense moves and how to wield the weapons she had built into their flak jackets.
As evening fell, Bas called everyone together for a final briefing.
"Tomorrow, we set out to protect our world and our timeline," she said with quiet determination.
"Each of you knows your assigned location and your role.
Remember, we're not just fighting for ourselves and the world at large, but also for the entire fabric of reality. "
“No pressure,” Lioness joked.
