Chapter 14

After going shopping early in the morning and buying food for Mel and herself that evening, Evie treated herself to a coffee at what had become one of her favourite cafés – Café Felix.

She loved sitting here on the corner of bustling Boulevard Aguillon, the old fountain between her and the archway leading to the small original harbour of the town.

Further down the boulevard, a former barracks opposite numerous cafés and restaurants had been transformed into studios and showrooms. Not all were currently open, but a couple of artists were showing their work and several large sculptures were being carefully delivered to one of the studios.

Evie finished her coffee and stood up. Time to return to the apartment and do a couple of hours’ writing.

She’d finally started to write up her journal with the past week’s events and to make a few outlines for features.

She definitely needed to get something with a couple of photographs sent to her boss with the promise of more to come on a regular basis.

And then start pitching some new ideas to other magazines, both here in Europe and back home.

Ten minutes later, opening the street door of her apartment building, she came face to face with a girl about her own age leaving. ‘Bonjour,’ she said, hoping the girl would stop and introduce herself. ‘Je suis Evie, je habite,’ and she pointed upstairs.

‘Sarah. I’m late. Sorry I can’t stop.’ And she was gone.

Evie gave a philosophical shrug. Oh well, maybe next time she’d have more time. And that had sounded suspiciously like an American accent, so that could be a plus.

Once up in her apartment Evie put the food in the fridge before opening her laptop on the small table in front of the window ready to work, but first she was going to read another entry in GeeGee’s journal.
