Chapter 13

Teddy

She’s pregnant. I don’t know why her announcement shakes me so much. Maybe it’s because I suspect the father is a piece of shit that never deserved Ariel. Maybe it’s because she had to run to ensure the safety of her baby. Or maybe it’s the tiniest part of myself that’s jealous that she seems to be getting her happy ending, unlike me. I sit silently at the dinner table while everyone asks Ariel about the baby and her plans. She answers everyone enthusiastically.

Every time I think she can’t draw me in anymore, I’m proven wrong. Her strength is amazing. The way she is handling everything with a smile still on her face draws me in and makes me feel something. I don’t have a name for it yet. I just want to draw her into my arms and protect her from people like her ex. I want to fight the world for her if she ever feels anything but joy.

While everyone is distracted, I pick up the ultrasound picture. I’ve never seen one before, let alone held one, but seeing this one baffles me. There in the picture is a small baby, could probably fit on my fingertip. Yet the protective urge it brings out of me is more powerful than the sun.

After dinner, I research everything I need to know about pregnancy. I promised Ariel she was safe here, and I intend to keep that promise. Knowing everything will keep her safe. Like what if she goes into labor here, and we can’t make it to the hospital? Fuck. I’ll have to research how to deliver a baby.

One hour later, I’ve got a whole novel’s worth of research printed out and in a folder. I’ve also got a list of all the items someone who’s pregnant could need or want. I put it in my pocket and head to the store. Of course none of the stores here are open so I’ll have to drive to the city to go to the 24 Hour Grocery and Market. It’s an hour and a half drive, but these thing are needed immediately.

At the store, I’m all over the place trying to find all the items on my list. I’ve got most of them and just need a few more of the items.

Nausea Relief

Pregnancy Pillow

Adjustable Shoes

Belly Lotion

Compression Socks

Heating Pad

Maternity Belt

Snacks

I finally find the pregnancy pillow, and quickly find everything else. For snacks I throw in a whole bunch of cookies, candy, chips, and ice cream into the buggy. Until I know what she craves while pregnant, I will have multiple options.

When I get home, everyone is asleep, so I place most of the items beside her door. And then I head to the office. At the store, I found a new chair. It’s supposed to be very comfortable, and it was highly recommended for pregnant women. I set the chair up, and throw the other chair out. I also found a mini fridge at the store which I set up close to her desk. I fill it with water and juice. Then on top of the fridge I place a basket full of snacks.

After everything is set up, I head to bed.
