Chapter 37
Sarah's POV
I definitely don't like the way Lincoln's been acting. Walking out of the test room, I see Fabian entering some data into the computer or whatever the hell he's doing.
"Fabian, can I talk to you for a second?" I ask.
Fabian looks up, pipes up, and waves at me. The man is very pretty. I never really noticed before.
The fact that Gabby is talking to him really made me pay attention. I've only ever seen Lincoln.
Lincoln is the most attractive guy, or at least one of the most attractive guys. And what makes him more attractive to me is the fact that he's the tallest. I like really tall guys.
Who doesn't?
Fabian is a lot shorter, maybe about 5'10", but still, he makes up for it with that mug of his, pronounced cheekbones that are chiseled.
God, Lincoln has a more intense face. The hooded eyes, his dark brown hair. Fabian has a little lighter brown hair, green eyes, and doesn't look so bad himself.
Definitely out of the league for someone like Gabrielle.
Putting an arm around him, I pull him in close.
"What's going on between you and Gabrielle?" I ask, smiling.
Fabian smiles.
"None of your business," he answers.
"Oh come on," I say. "Everyone can tell you guys have chemistry."
Fabian then looks at me and smiles. I can tell that there's absolutely no humor in that expression.
"You like weaseling your way in between people's relationships, don't you?" he asks.
I take my arm from around him, looking a little outraged and feeling called out.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" I ask.
Fabian smiles and puts on his coat, preparing to go downstairs or to do something with the cart.
"I don't know. I just noticed that about you," he says.
I lean forward slightly, curiosity getting the better of me.
"What exactly is it you think you noticed about me?" I ask him.
He smiles at me again, that stupid smile that's now starting to annoy me.
"You think people don't see things, Sarah, but I see things. I'm here all the time and I notice. Everyone notices, just like you noticed I have chemistry with Gabrielle. People notice that you also have chemistry with Lincoln."
"Yeah, everyone knows by now that Lincoln and I are fucking, but it feels as though you're accusing me of doing something that I didn't do."
Fabian locks eyes with me and leans in closer, his voice dropping.
"So you didn't try to place yourself in between Lincoln and Gabrielle when they were married?" he asks.
I smile at him, letting a hint of steel slip into my tone.
"Fabian Gent. You are crossing a line," I tell him.
Fabian smiles anyway, unfazed.
"I have to oversee a lot of things," he then says.
"I oversee the internal routing map for the deliveries, supply requests, document flow.
I'm aware of where people are and where things are.
That's my job, and a backup courier if people need, so it's my job to notice things and keep track of things.
And I've been here quite a while. So don't insult me when you tell me not to notice or act surprised, and I do notice where you are in relation to Lincoln at every moment of the day, even when you don't belong there. "
Fabian zips up his coat.
I fix him with a pointed look, tilting my head.
"Why are you wearing a coat, by the way? It's not that cold out."
Fabian smirks, his eyes glinting with mischief.
"It's always nippy whenever you're in close proximity," he tells me.
He grabs his thermos and phone, turning toward the door. I reach out and catch his arm, stopping him in his tracks.
"Fabian, hold up."
He stops, not turning around. His beautiful light brown hair, which rests on his upper back, sways beautifully as he turns his head to look at me with that smug look on his face.
"There's a lot of things that you might not know," I tell him. "I know you say you see everything, but Lincoln was in a really bad place in that marriage. Gabby is not the person you think she is."
Fabian raises an eyebrow, his tone light but probing.
"Is that right?" he asks.
I nod, unflinching.
"Yeah, she drove Lincoln crazy," I say.
Fabian glances away for a moment, then turns back to me with a slow smirk curling his lips.
"Well, lucky you were there to help keep him sane, right?" he says, sarcasm dripping from every word. "What would he have done without you?"
I feel the heat rise in my chest, but I keep my voice even.
"I'm not the one who broke up his marriage," I reply coolly. "That was already headed down the drain."
Fabian leans back slightly, his smirk sharpening.
"Yeah," he says, "and you made sure it stayed there."
I narrow my eyes at him, irritation flaring. I really don't like the way he's coming at me.
"Is it such a problem because you clearly like Gabrielle," I shoot back, "so you're acting as though there's nothing in it for you?"
Smiling, Fabian turns to me and starts walking back slowly.
"I didn't say there wasn't anything in it for me. Now there clearly is, but two things can be true at the same time. I'm interested in Gabrielle, and you're also not a nice person who took advantage of a man who was vulnerable at a time he should've been working on his marriage," Fabian says.
I grit my teeth.
"So Lincoln is completely absolved of any responsibility?" I ask him.
"Didn't say that either," Fabian says. "Gotta go, Sarah. See you later."
He waves over his shoulder as he leaves.
