Chapter 43
Gigi stared at the TV, gripping her phone tightly as she watched footage of Beau Lee chasing a green sedan through a Chicago parking lot on the five p.m. news.
The driver’s vehicle swerved dangerously.
Reporters were already throwing out assumptions about what had transpired, and Gigi’s fear was making her sick to her stomach.
She hit Beau Lee’s number and waited, tapping her foot anxiously. The phone rang twice before he picked up. “Gigi, I—” Beau Lee began, but she cut him off immediately.
“Don’t you ‘Gigi’ me! What the hell were you thinking, chasing down that damn sedan? Are you trying to get yourself killed?” she snapped, her voice sharp with worry.
Beau Lee let out a deep sigh. “No choice, Gigi. They could have been connected to the case. I couldn’t stand by and watch while they escaped.”
“You’re not a cop, Beau Lee! You’re an attorney. You belong in the courtroom, fighting in that arena—not out here on the streets with Capes like Will Smith and Martin Lawrence!” Gigi said, her voice firm. “Bring your ass home. Now.”
There was a long pause before Beau Lee responded, “I was planning to come home this weekend. I already had a flight booked for tomorrow evening, which would allow me to be there Friday night and all day Saturday before I fly out on Sunday. But I’ll have Nellie change it to a seven o’clock flight tomorrow morning, because I love you, Gigi, and I know you’re upset with me. I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Good,” she replied, her voice softening but still resolute.
“And when you get here, we’ll finish this conversation.
You need to understand that the most important job you have is being a father to your child—making sure her future is filled with love, hope, and you in it.
Beau Lee Cooper, I love you, but you need to hear what I’m saying to you today. ”
Beau Lee didn’t argue. The call ended, and Gigi took a controlled breath, trying to steady her nerves. She knew the case had Beau Lee stretched thin, but this was getting out of control. He was too close to the edge, and she had to pull him back in.
