Road Conditions: Damp surface, no recent gritting, unlit stretch
Visibility: Low at time of discovery (dawn, mist)
Incident Summary:
At 06:12 on 19 September 2021, North Yorkshire Police Control Room received a 999 call from a local dog walker reporting a vehicle partially visible at the bottom of a cliffside drop adjacent to Cliffside Approach. Caller did not attempt access due to unsafe terrain.
Fire and Rescue Service and Yorkshire Air Ambulance were dispatched. First response unit (PC Richardson and PC Dalton) arrived on scene at 06:42. Vehicle located approximately 18 metres down a steep incline. Specialist recovery access required due to unstable terrain.
Fire crew used cutting equipment to access interior.
One confirmed fatality at scene (driver’s side), adult male.
Passenger seat occupied by pregnant adult female, unconscious but alive on discovery.
Presented with multiple injuries. Transported via air ambulance to James Cook Trauma Centre, Middlesbrough at 07:11.
