Avery

Istopped at the Skulls entrance and sat back on my seat while I fished for the card.

The kid manning the gate didn't bother looking at my face.

His eyes were locked on my chest. Not that there was much to report in that department.

Didn't matter. He had that stupid glaze.

The kind that got a boy's teeth scattered across a barroom floor in a place like this.

I was talking, but he wasn't hearing a word.

He was too busy mentally peeling off my jacket.

I held the card out at arm's length, off to the side, so he had no choice but to tear his eyes away.

He blinked, like he was waking up.

I wanted to slug him. Right upside his dumb, slack face, but I needed my bike looked at, so he got lucky.

He pointed toward what I assumed was the workshop and resumed his position. Mouth open. Eyes glued.

I rolled forward and hoped like fuck the next guy would focus on my bike.
