I'd already killed the engine when we pulled up. Figured I'd be waiting for her ride back.

Then she gave me my marching orders.

I took long enough firing it back up to see where she landed. The hair salon.

Trim or wax it was.

But she didn't go in. She just stood there staring at the door with her hand on the knob. Like whatever was behind it scared the shit out of her.

Then she turned, and I thought maybe she was checking I'd gone. But she didn't even seem to register me. She looked at her phone, but her thumb never moved. She’d probably order her ride when the job was done.

Something was off.

I started my bike and she looked up. I kept my head forward but looked at her behind my dark shades. I didn't give her any reason to think I was some kind of stalker. I pulled a U-turn and headed back the way we came.

In my mirror, I saw her open the door and disappear inside.

I waited a second, then pulled another U-turn, and idled up to the park opposite.

I didn't know why. Wasn't my business. Wasn't my girl. Wasn't my problem.

But I sat and waited.
