It wasn’t a long ride to Rocky Neck, so I convinced Avery to have a bite before we left.

She agreed, and as we entered the clubhouse, Cody, my shaved-head brother was heading out.

“Hey, bro.” He looked at Avery.

“This is Avery,” I said.

“Stepping up in the world, bro.”

Avery smiled, and I kept my mouth shut. Thankfully he kept moving and I didn’t need to offer an explanation.

I found us a table away from most of the noise and she agreed to fries and a burger.

“This place is nice,” she said.

“Yeah. Like the people in it,” I said looking around at my Skulls family.

I'd never noticed so many hanging around at this time of day, but who was I to talk. Here I was waiting for a burger with enough time to take a stranger up the coast.

She was so fucking pretty that it was hard to peel my eyes off her, but I didn’t want to give her the wrong impression.

I wasn't searching for answers. I was waiting for them.

But she looked beautiful as a blonde, and I was sure she’d be no less beautiful without it.

She pulled her bandanna off slowly and placed it on the table like she was scared to let it go.

We locked eyes and I made sure that’s where mine stayed.

“You're beautiful, Avery.” Fuck. I couldn’t blame drink for my loose tongue because I hadn’t had any, and as soon as the words came out I realized how in-fucking-appropriate they were.

I shook my head and closed my eyes.

Was she going to fire up again? She had every right to. Instead I heard, “Thanks,” and I thought, “Thank god.”

“I’m not good with words,” I said.

“Those ones were fine,” she said.

Thankfully one of the new prospects brought our food and asked if we’d like drinks.

“Water, thanks,” she said.

“Same,” I told him. When I saw her questioning look, I said, “I’ve got a precious delivery. Can’t risk it.”

She picked up a fry and popped it into her mouth.

Those lips.

I bet they tasted good… even salty.
