Chapter Thirteen

Kat

Iwasn’t sure how I went from watching Friends in the light to my hand being on fire in the dark but something was WRONG.

Something was wrong and it needed to be fixed.

I cried out, unintelligibly, I knew, just wanting someone to fix this.

Someone needed to put out the fire before it burned me whole.

“Kat, Kat sweetheart listen to me. Look. Look at your hand. Here. See?” came a calm, calming voice from behind me.

The lights came on, and I had to look away from how bright they were.

I could feel that my cheeks were wet with tears.

But I listened to the voice and looked at my hand.

It wasn’t on fire. But that was… even worse.

“Why does it feel like it’s on fire then?” I asked, confused, not even caring that my voice cracked. “Fix it, Henry. Fix it, please,” I begged, sobbing.

“I did sweetheart. I did. The doctor showed me the button to give you another dose of the pain meds. Just give it a minute. I’ve got you.

Shh, you’re okay,” he said soothingly, pulling my head to his chest. I just kept sobbing, wanting to cut my hand off.

I knew it would feel better that way. It had to.

“We’re not cutting your hand off baby girl. You need that, and I promise it won’t feel any better. Just give the meds a minute to kick in. Just a minute, and you’ll fall right back to sleep. I’ve got you, Kat,” he murmured, rocking me ever so slightly. I hiccupped.

My eyes were getting heavy and the fire seemed like it was maybe retreating slightly. I kept hiccupping, and I thought maybe they were there to stay. Oh, well. I had bigger problems.

“I’ve got you, Kat. I’ve got you. Just go back to sleep,” he whispered, turning the lights off again. My eyes fully closed, knowing he’d deal with anything that needed dealing with. I would take the support for the night. As I settled down into his warm arms again, I smiled.

It was nice to not be alone.
